I grew up catching LM bass and was very good at it. I was taught by my grandad boat fishing and always caught bass. I’d pond fish for bass as a kid and caught an 8.5 lb bass out of a farm pond the size of your living room.

My kids are gone/older and I decided I missed fishing.

I can’t catch anything.

I’m working the two bayous near my home and even a stocked lake.

Nothing.

What’s the water temp there?

Try a weightless trick worm either watermelon red or junebug fished on light line.

On another note, bass fishing sucks right now and I’m not sure why. Everyone I talk to is saying the same. Could be weird weather or rain amounts we been having.

What bait are you using?

Probably need to slow it down regardless of what you’re using since the water is cold.

If I can't get bit, I downsize the bait and slow down. One thing that helps you get the picture is throwing a worm out on concrete and actually watching how much it moves, what might feel like a tiny bump to you may drag the bait a foot. If they're lethargic sometimes that will be way too much and they won't be interested. You could very well be in post spawn where you are and they could just not be in the mood.

A 1/4 ounce weighted texas rigged baby brush hog, trick worm, or speed craw in a natural color like green pumkin or watermelon is about as much of a sure thing as it gets. Darker/muddy water go junebug or black and blue. If there is vegetation on the bottom and you can't work a texas rig slowly, switch over to a senko or fluke weightless with the same attention to being slow.

No one can tell you exactly what your fish will want. As soon as I tell you slowing down is the deal, you'll be reeling in fast to cast back out and one will hammer it. Figuring them out is what makes it fun.

I know that much.

On the bayous I’ve been dropping hair jigs next to the cypress trees. Done the same with some plastics.

Knocking a squarebill off the cypress is another thing to try this time of year. Actively try to get it to hit tree trunks and lay downs, including submerged knees. At the very least you should snag a fry guarder. Between that and a slow plastic you should get some info to work with.

Scoop I caught a few yesterday on a chatterbait and spinnerbait. They wouldn’t touch anything, even my trickworm. I’m assuming all were reaction strikes verses really chasing it for food.

I am having trouble getting bites in the stocked pond behind my house. And that’s usually a sure thing.

I know they are lazy with the cold water but I can’t get anything going dropping good winter baits on top of their heads assuming they are around the cypress trees/humps.

Give it some time to warm up.

In a few weeks, run a single bladed spinnerbait just under the surface of that stocked lake, starting as close to the bank as you can and work your way out deeper. I used to use a chartreuse/white skirt with a copper blade. If one strikes but misses, throw right back over the same spot.

put out a gill net. if you don't have one, just go ride with one of those baws that puts out gill nets for choupic. they routinely throw away huge bass as bycatch. thank me later.

Get you a white and chartreuse humdinger spinnerbait with a white trailer.

Watermelon red baby brush hog.

pumpkin seed/chartreuse lizard.

Bandit crank bait.

Rinse and repeat.

I grew up LM and SM bass fishing in the upper midwest. I was really good at it.

Then I moved to south Louisiana and I find it wayyyy harder down here. That said I stick to saltwater for the most part.

like everyone here is saying fishing all around the state is a grind, most fish are inactive at the moment as they're waiting to move up shallow to make their beds/spawn. I went fish a local pond earlier, no luck. Went fish the local public lake thursday, caught 2. It's just a crappy inbetween time where not much is happening. If you're gonna catch fish it's gonna have to be on something slowwww like a worm/brushhog/jig, but more importantly don't overthink and give it a few days of 70ish degree days and it'll pick up well.
