Always amazed how people love to get on a high horse and decide what they think “hunting and fishing” is or is not!!

Every single person does, including you.

We all have opinions, and just because some disagree with yours doesn't give you the high horse.

That's not hunting, it's a means to an end.

If I am in a survival situation, don't care.

If I am trying to be sporting, can't do it.

different types/ways of hunting are harder/take more skill than others. Just like bream/sacalait fishing are tougher and take more skill than bass fishing.

What if I use live bream that I caught to then catch the bass? Can I then crown myself as grand master fisherman?

You're basically a king if you do that

Using baits and lures to catch fish is ridiculous. Who can’t catch an animal when you trick then to thinking you have a food source?

Real men do this

Truth is, this entire thread is sanctimonious from the start. We don’t want to kill bear because “they were here first”, yet this entire board is about people killing all types of animals that were here first

Why does it hit people in the feels to kill an animal who is destroying property(bears), but it’s fine to kill an animal doing no harm at all(deer)?

Not really anymore at all. Hell, the FDA recently lowered the safe eating temp of pork to 145 degrees

That's for wild pig or domestic?

I had a professor in the 90's at LSU that said even back then that it was safe to eat store bought pork rare or mid-rare because those pigs have likely never been off a cement slab. It's the farm pigs and wild ones that waller around in the mud that carry trichinosis.

I don't think anybody in here said we shouldn't have bear hunting if the population supports it. They're saying we shouldn't extirpate them because some folks get their feeders flipped over. Basically deciding that a native species shouldn't exist here because it's inconvenient. To put them on the same level as feral hogs is idiotic.

For now….

I lived in East Tn for two years. Louisiana will soon be kicking themselves in the arse

Hogs only run of your deer sometimes and mess with feeders. Bears will love your camp house while you are way for months at a time

Hogs aren't native. Bears are. Not everything is about deer.

I truly don’t know why being native in terms of animals and how we treat them in regards to hunting and nuisance matter in today’s society. We weren’t native here either.

Pigs have been here for 500 years. That’s more native than my people

It'd be nice if euros were gone lol, I'd have more places to hunt. (joking)

there's a lot of ways that wildlife interacts with the ecosystem that we may not know about. Hell, they say that Arizona used to look completely different when they had a lot of beavers there because the land held more water. You remove a species from the landscape and you end up with a lot of unintended consequences.

I think certain animals do fine with the “modern ecosystems” we have built. Bears weren’t one of them. Forcing then back into a place like Louisiana was a mistake in my opinion. We should have seen how much of a nuisance they were in more open area like East TN before we thought about bringing them back to Louisiana

If we want bears to live here and not be an issue, we need to unwind about 150 years

They aren't anywhere close to this. A gator lays anywhere from 20 to 50 eggs, and nests every year. Bears produce maybe 3 or 4 cubs in a good year (average is 2), and breed every other year. Bears become sexually mature between 3 and 6 years old, while alligators are between 10 and 15 years old. So let's say a bear starts reproducing at 4, and a gator starts at 12. The bear might produce 12 cubs in the 8 years between her becoming sexually mature and the gator becoming sexually mature. The alligator is going to lay and likely hatch more eggs than that in her first year. It's just not even remotely close to the same. Could they be as problematic as alligators? That's another question entirely, and subjective at best.

This doesn’t even take into account the alligator farms releasing gators back into the wild, which I assume is still happening.

How about we start a lottery for bear tags in the state? Money goes to helping bears and maybe they eventually learn the feeders are for the deer to be hunted, not them.

pretty sure that's the plan, but since they were on endangered list it's complicated and will face lawsuits

they were fine here until the suitable habitat reached, then greatly exceeded carrying capacity.

And they should have seen that coming. Even if they open up a season, not enough people will want to hunt them to control it.
