Isnt that about true for every animal we harvest?

It doesn't feel right killing a gar fish or old turtle.

They were likely alive when our grandfathers were young.

I don't get the draw in killing an alligator gar. They are one of the most sluggish slowest fish in the water. The biggest skill in killing one is for it to surface near your boat.

Its like arrowing a log and dragging it aboard for pictures.

Sad, there is no telling how old that fish was. A living dinosaur

Do garfish not have otoliths? We used to count redfish age like tree rings in ecology. I'd imagine you could do the same with a gar if you had enough time and patience

Same, and to be honest turtle meat ain't all that. Kill a 40lb turtle that's 50 years old and get 10 lbs of meat off it..... ain't worth it to me but to each his own.

My dad was born in Mansura in 1912. He did most of his growing up in Alexandria. He told me stories about how they would gig gar from a row boat in Catahoula Lake. He said there were lots of monster gar back then. They would skin and clean the gar and cook it whole over a wood fire they would build in a pit with chicken wire stretched over it. You didn't waste anything edible in those days.

Two years ago I hooked a gar that was about four and a half feet long. After bringing it to the edge of the boat I decided that I wasn't in the mood for a battle to death on the deck with a big assed toothy dinosaur, so I cut it loose.

This giant gar? No thanks.

I somehow snagged the foot of an alligator snapping turtle on a trot line and when I pulled it up, it was the largest turtle I've ever seen in my life. It's head was as big as a football and the shell was about 3.5-4 feet across. We contemplated killing it, but finally let it go after thinking about how old it was.

Bowfishing for big alligator gar is more challenging then you think, they are very smart fish. Of coarse they get stupid during spawning season just like a buck in rut. I once hunted a big gar 7’ 3” 197lbs for 4 years one time before getting a good shot on him. He had a old 1 prong gig head stuck in its back from the old timers back in the day. I don’t shot any alligator gar under 6’ long. It’s like deer hunting, I have spent many days in the water from daylight to dark and come home empty handed. Any fish I shoot never goes to waste my family and friends all love gar patty’s and balls. I absolutely despise people that kill these fish and waste them. I would like to see a limit for alligator gar in Louisiana, to many people go jugging and fill the boat up with 4 foot gar. No way they can eat all of that before it goes bad.
