I’m looking at a used pontoon boat that is for sale. It is a fairly new boat. It is a 23’ and has a Yamaha 150 HP 4 stroke. When I looked up the specs of the boat, it is “rated” for a 125 HP. Should I have any concerns? Does it change the weight limit on the boat?

Just get a new coastguard plate made with a 150 rating. Green Jeans will never know the difference. They see a bunch they have no clue have been changed.

Insurance company may not be happy about an overrated boat.

This.

I don't think theres any legal implications. I've always heard you wont be able to insure it.

Just got a reply back from the manufacturer. They said that if the boat does have a larger engine than it’s rated for, then the warranty is voided. The guy says he still has 5 years left on the warranty. That’s a deal breaker for me.

Did he put the bigger motor on or did he buy it that way?

He has 5 years left on the engine warranty or the hull warranty?

if you are in Louisiana we do have a statute that says you cant overpower a boat.

RS-34-851.12

quote:

No watercraft shall be equipped with any motor or other propulsion machinery beyond its safe power capacity taking into consideration the type and construction of such watercraft and other existing operating conditions.

and according to RS 34:851.31:

quote:

A.(1) Any person who violates any provision of R.S. 34:851.7, 851.9, 851.11, 851.12, 851.13, 851.14, 851.15, 851.16, 851.17, 851.18, 851.19, 851.20, 851.21, 851.23, 851.24, 851.27(C), and 851.30 shall be guilty of a class one violation, R.S. 56:31.

I'm not sure what a class one violation is, but looks like it is illegal to overpower a boat in Louisiana.

I had a 225 mercury two stroke in a sea hunt hull rated for a 175 damn thing ran like a scared rabbit. This was 1999 and Allstate covered it for extra premium probably voided my hull warranty though.

That guy did you a favor by over powering the boat. Buy the boat.

Moreso, it's a hull that's specifically designed for cruising, not hauling arse.

I'm surprised there is a horsepower plate on that boat. I always thought Feds/USCG only required manufacturers to put a plate on boats that are less than 20 feet in length.

I have a 21 ft. Bullet bass boat that doesn't have a HP plate. I guess pontoon boats are different - or else the regs have changed.

eta: I looked up the USCG regulations for HP rating on boats. Found the following:

Title 33 NAVIGATION AND NAVIGABLE WATERS
PART 183 BOATS AND ASSOCIATED EQUIPMENT

Subpart D—Safe Powering

§183.51 Applicability.
This subpart applies to monohull boats less than 20 feet in length, except sailboats, canoes, kayaks, and inflatable boats, that are designed or intended to use one or more outboard motors for propulsion.

So I'm guessing "monohull" is the operative term that might cause pontoon boats over 20 ft. in length to require HP rating plate.

I think it’s geared more toward the manufactures warranty for the hull.

Call charter lakes and ask them if they will cover as it sits now. Owner probably has coverage now, ask who he uses and if they know about motor.
