Taking my 3 year old up to the camp tomorrow and it's likely he will see me take down a couple hogs.

Is 3 too young to introduce him? He's caught and helped clean fish...

My dad had the carcass of a management buck in the corner of the room as soon as I popped out. I shook my head at him and thus began our relationship.

I don't think so. My son has been at the camp since he was less than a year old and started hanging around the skinning shed when he was able to walk. He was a little weirded out by the first dead deer he saw, but loves it now. I shot a hog last weekend with him and that's the first kill he was in the stand for & he is all in now (4yo). He fishes with me all the time, so he's used to seeing fish cleaned, etc as well. Just don't force him to do/see anything he doesn't want and chances are he'll come around and enjoy if.

Started my son last year. He was 3 at the time, and on his second hunt with me I shot a big doe. He was SUPER pumped up about the whole experience and he's for sure hooked. Had him blood trail it for me and help me load it up. He was on cloud 9 the same as if he were the one who shot it. He told everybody the whole story about how I shot it and he blood trailed it and he found it.

No not too young

They still have magical thought process until 5 to 7 though so they really dont understand death and the permanence of it.

Show respect to the animals killed. But dont focus too much on the carnage or trying teach a firearm lesson. Simply make sure he stays away from the guns until hes a bit older and of course keep them safe and unloaded when being stored.

Go make some great memories!

My daughter has been with me on 3 hog kills. Hasn't seen me kill any of them, but has heard the shot and watched the cleaning. She's all about it. Loves the camp. I always remind her when we eat something I've killed or caught. I think it helps. I think it all depends on the kid but 3 isn't too young.

Every stick will be a gun, and everything else will be a hog... Goodtimes

My daughter was 3 when she was introduced to deer hunting. She came with me on the 4wheeler to pick it up in the cold. Watched me clean an 8 pt.

My daughter is 3 and has seen multiple dead deer and pigs. She says daddy shoots them to eat. She loves to be at the camp and in the woods.

Probably 4 or 5 on rabbit and squirrel hunts with my dad.

When I was 10 or 11 my dad got a buck and two doe new Zealand rabbits. They had some kits and my brother and I thought they were pets. Then we had to help skin and clean them.

Right at daylight I made a head shot on a doe and blew the top of it's head off. Pretty gruesome looking. Drug it to the house and hung it up and was going to dress it out before my 4 year old daughter woke up and saw it. I got it hanging and she walked out the back door. She sees the doe and sucks in a huge breath of air, like a gasp, and then says, "Good shot dad!" I knew she would be fine.

Having said that, every kid is different. If I had a kid who seemed more sensitive or emotional in nature, I would be more careful. My middle daughter was that way and wanted no part of the kill or aftermath. Except for the eating. She loves venison, just doesn't want to know how the sausage gets made.

I have memories of changing diapers of all mine in the woods/tailgate/boat. They’ve been going squirrel or dove hunting since they were big enough to walk and not trip on sticks. Deer hunting and seeing killing by 4-5 or so. My wife has a photo of one of mine whopping frogs on the head with a hammer and handing them to me to clean while in diapers. It’s all just food to them. I never made it too serious at that age. Every child is different. Mine are all girls though, so they’re a little different.

If you read the deer hunting Facebook groups, most of their kids have already downed a trophy buck with a 45-70 by 4 years old.
