re: How often do you change your oil?

My 07 silverado had the % life indicator and it was for 10,000 miles. No way Im driving that far on regular oil. Guess I would on synthetic, but never get it. I try to stick to every 5k miles. I refuse to get it done every 3k miles. Thats what the places want you to do so you keep them in business.

At a certain amount of mileage, it magically comes up with oil life. No way does it actually test the stuff. That point is based off of the odometer, and I don't think hours because having a load on an engine is different than just sitting.

The GM Oil Life Monitor System is not a mileage counter. It is actually a computer based software algorithm that determines when to change oil based on engine operating conditions. There is no actual oil condition sensor. Rather, the computer continuously monitors engine-operating conditions to determine when to change oil. Over the years, millions of test miles have been accumulated to calibrate the system for a variety of vehicles. The system was first introduced in 1988 and is now on more than 10 million GM vehicles.

The beauty of the GM Oil Life Monitor System is that it will automatically adjust the oil change interval based engine characteristics, driving habits and the climate in which the vehicle is operated. For instance, mild highway driving in a warm climate will maximize the interval between oil changes. Depending on the vehicle, this could be in excess of 7000 miles and as high as 12,000 miles. On the other hand, short trip driving in cold a climate may limit the oil change to 3000 miles or less. In general, most people that drive a combination of city and highway schedules find that the GM Oil Life Monitor System will indicate an oil change every 7500 to 8500 miles.
Think this is from a GMC FAQ website

I do it every 4 months and drive a little over 20k/year so I guess around 7K. I switched to synthetic when the truck was over 150K and now I have 201K.
It's almost a decade old, and I'm just starting to want a new Chevy or downsize to a Toyota.

Yea that's what I was getting at.
It doesn't monitor the oil, it monitors the engine and uses that to determine te oil life.
Hammertime forgot a major rule in engineering. K.i.s.s.

KISS = odo monitoring. Maybe that is too much KISS.
The one on this Tahoe said zero at 3500, I think. Brain just quit working for a while. Too much homework, but I was really trying to get at the fact that it doesn't actually test the oil.

My driving must have been ideal conditions and I dont know how because I have a HEAVY foot. I checked it before most oil changes and it was always = to 10,000 miles. I do it around 5k miles and if I was under a little it would be a little over 50%, over 5k miles... I would be a little under 50% remaining.
Prob more likely to due to our mild winters etc..

Hours are a better indicator than miles if you want to just go by one thing IMO.
The ECU is already monitoring all that shite, so you might as well use all of it IMO.
Eta: the intervals on my dads 02 2500 vary by as much as 3k miles depending on what he's been doing.

Do you know the reason that you are not supposed to flip flop between synthetic and conventional? I have heard this many times but was never given a reason why.
they say they would gum up..
Ive been told the new stuff could be mixed without problems..
Most say on the bottle now that mixxing is fine
