been competitively sailing my whole life, mostly in the gulf, i can handle heavy swells no problem... but the stuff those guys deal with would have me vomiting all day every day
I did a cross gulf sailing on a similar sized vessel once just to see what it was like, and it really sucked. The gulf (of Alaska) isn't quite as rough as the Bering Sea can get either.

the lack of sleep would do it for me
I have nothing to prove. I enjoy the following things way too much to be stuck on a shitty crab boat.
Whiskey
Woman
Sleep
My dogs
Long hot showers
Privacy
As you can see I would not be willing to give these things up hoping to make a mere 40-50K.
I have made a comfortable life for myself and do not intend on screwing it up by boarding a crab boat with a bunch of hardlegs.

The cold wet cond was too much for a south Ms boy to handle.

I went to college with a Russian guy who went to do it one summer. Never saw him again.

I could do this when I was younger but definitely not now.
Also... when its really bitter cold... that's when I would hate it the most.
I don't think I'd last a day crabbing. I could probably drive the boat or be a cook or something though.

Land for these guys is a steady string of collection agencies, exes, and parole officers. Going to sea is a stress buster
Seen those guys blow 20-30k in a week at places like Rosies Bar in Pelican.

You must have had some serious connections, it's a tough gig to get.
