re: How far do you go to cover your scent?

For a "new" deer hunter I can tell you the "hunt the wind" advice is equally frustrating as it is helpful.
Unless you happen to be hunting an area with a hard perimeter, like a cliff, a large fast flowing creek/river, a large completely open non crop field, a road way, or a high fence, there is freaking way to know which way the deer are going to approach. Since they can approach from 360 degrees to the area you hope you will see them (ideally your shooting lane). Which wind do you pick specifically?
I try to hunt the wind. Approach from an angle that does not spread my scent over my shooting lanes, and set up where my scent will not be pushed in that direction either.
That being said I wash clothes in scent free UV brightner free detergent, store clothes in an "airtight" camo closet in the garage with a couple of bundles of pine/cedar/oak/goatweed. I use the scent free shampoo and soap, dry with a towel washed with the hunting clothes, and use scent free deodorant. I put on a base layer, and mid layer if cold enough and drive to hunt. Once there I lightly spray clothes with scent killer at armpits, crotch, socks, and around collar of shirt then put on outer layer. I make a point to spray down boots and pant cuffs of outer layer. I usually put a little doe pee or doe estrus depending on season on my boots and walk in. I do not touch any foliage/objects with bare skin on way in.
And I know many here with scoff at me but I also believe your breath is an important odor offender too. So I brush teeth before going to stand and gargle and then eat foods that deer should like (apple, cereal grains, ect.)

I really hope that this was hearsay and you didn't actually see this happen, cause that belong in the unethical drinking thread.

I am terrible at judging wind direction. Any pointers?
If you hunt a camp with established stands pull up the weather channel and see which direction the wind will be blowing. Try to hunt and approach with wind in your face.
We use fragrance free detergent for the baby. I use arm and hammer scent free deodorant. I don't use the same soap I used when I was trying to get laid in highschool. I might spray myself with a cover scent of earth, dirt, pine, acorn or whatever.
I don't think it matters as much as the TV people say it does, matters even less when you are in a box stand or ground blind. I think it may have something to do with the humidity around here too that makes it harder to pick up the scent through the air versus on the ground.

I do this, but more hoping to get one curious enough to follow me in. On occasion I'll hang a little cotton scent lure next to me in the tree with active scrape on it. Can't tell you if it had any effect, but I'd imagine it makes a decent cover scent.

I don't do shite. I've had to put out a cigarette to shoot a deer 100 yards away. Mother fricker must be smoking crack if they think I'm gonna spend $1000 on soap and clothes to shoot a deer
IMHO, most important things are to stay still and don't make noise

I use scent free soap before a hunt and I generally wash my hunting clothes in scent free detergent with no UV brighteners.

Basically, I have to bathe, wash clothes and wear some kind of footwear anyway. Since I have to do that, I generally try to minimize those scents.

I don't take any further steps.

I hope my deer like gas station biscuits and hot chocolate, because that's what they have been smelling.

I have heard that standing next to a camp fire before going hunting and allowing the smoke to get in your clothes works but I have never tried this method. I usually just wash my clothes in some cheap scent free detergent and then go hunt. Hunting the wind is the best thing to do but deer can come from any direction at any time so that's not a guarauntee either.

Probably would be same way if I had a long drive. My drive is 5 min and I grab a cereal bar or two from the pantry on the way out the door.

This man gets it.
Almost carbon copy of what I do.
And the breath thing is WAYYYY underated. Surprised most people dont mention that.
On top of those things I also usually swap facemasks at midmorning due to the mouth odor that has been trapped into the mask.
Also usually bring some scent free wetnaps to wipe down sweat from walk in or climbing tree. Put dirty towelette back in ziploc when done.
Of course these things are done because I bowhunt only, so i'm kinds anal about the whole scent thing.
I'll add this... I believe some in the scentless sprays like Dead Down Wind, etc but don't put much faith in the cover scents like Fresh Earth, fox /doe pee , etc.
I imagine it's the difference between deer smelling you and going ... "Hmmmm human". Vs deer smelling you and going"Hmmm... Human with stinky fox, eath scent"
Best advice I can give you, other than hunt with the wind in your face, is to hunt high in the mornings and low in the evenings due to thermal currents.

Hunting the wind can be a very difficult thing to do when hunting from a stand, I gave up on that method years ago.
I have been strictly a bowhunter for the last twenty years. I build my own recurves and hunt without sights, so I need to keep my range no further than 25 yards or so. I've killed a lot of deer this way because I decided that controlling my scent is a lot more predictable (though tedious!) than trusting wind. As does Bleeding Purple, I bath before hunting, use scent killing spray on my body, wear clean scent free clothes and top off with a scent killing jacket\pants\cap. Brushing teeth and chewing mint gum is an absolute. I am meticulous about scent when hunting. I use no cover scents of any kind because I haven't found them to be necessary.
By taking care to enter the woods scent free I have many times been within literal inches of deer while hunting on the ground and not been scented - prior to doing these things I would get busted all the time. I have not been busted due to scent in the last 18 years, no shite. Don't let anyone tell you this method does not work, they just don't want to go through the trouble or expense.

To me it depends on the stand you're hunting/where deer come out. At my box stand, the deer travel in 150-200 yards from me, and i'm 10 feet high. In that case, i usually just spray feet and hat with Scent Blocker.
However, if i'm IN the woods amongst the deer, I spray dead head to toe.
My wife washed all of my hunting clothes with Tide fruity crap before the season, I can still smell it.
ETA - I'm also convinced deer like cigarette smoke. Biggest deer of my life (10 point) was shot at 30 yards with a cig in mouth.
