I would like to know also. I have had a few dogs that people said would tree a squirrel but it never happened.

I can't figure this out either and I hunt squirrels a good bit.

I know the Mountain or Treeing Feist is the go to dog, but lots of dogs can be squirrel dogs. You can train them to track scent I guess, but that part never made much sense to me, because squirrels just go up any tree and jump from tree to tree.
I take my Heeler squirrel hunting and he can spot the squirrels on the ground or in the trees, sometimes way before I see them. He does sniff them, but I don't think he's tracking them. He will chase them up a tree, and more importantly... when the squirrel circles the tree to hide from him... he crawls back around to my side ... right into my sights.

They run around and tree the squirrel. You then know what tree a squirrel is in, so its only a matter of time before you kill the little sucker

When the squirrels aren't jumping from tree to tree, and are instead gathering nuts on the ground, the dogs chase them up trees. Usually the squirrel hits the first tree (not his home tree), therefore a lot of times they can't get away from you and you can bust them. The dog trees them and you can either go find the three their in and bust them or wait until they jump to another tree.
