Heading to Texas in a couple weeks to deer hunt. Texas says have to keep a head with it, LA says no heads from other states can cross into LA. Not really sure on how to legally get the meat from TX into LA.

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Head does not equal meat

You can't bring back any spinal bones or any soft tissue attached to the head. I kill cull bucks so I have no interest in bringing back heads to mount. For years I cut the hind quarters at the ball joint so that took care of the no hip/spinal bones requirement.

Texas says you have to have evidence of sex. As an alternative, Texas allows the ranch owner to document in writing what each hunter killed, a simple note signed will work. I don't know if it is necessary but I also bring back my used tags.

If you want to mount a head cut off all soft tissue or drop it off at a taxidermy located in Texas and let them document what you did.

Wardens look for vehicles with La plates that have cargo carriers with ice chest, trailers with 4 wheelers or multiple large ice chest in the bed of a truck.

You could do everything rodnreel posted, or you can just not speed as tke said. Which one sounds more convenient to you?

And keep it hidden. Don't have any horns showing or hunting gear if you can keep from it.

Just have it processed in Texas and shipped to you in LA.

Meat isn't an issue, just spinal bones and soft tissue. If you kill a deer that you intend to mount you need to cape it out like a taxidermist would and cut the horns off leaving them attached to the skull plate. Peal the membrane off of the inside and clean it with water. You shouldn't have any problems doing this, other than it's a pain to cape it off the skull correctly. I recommend a set or razor blades and a screwdriver to assist.

Everyone suggesting the "don't speed and you'll be ok" thing really needs to take a step back and think about what you are suggesting.

You can quarter the meat and being it back just fine.

If you shoot a buck, cape it out, cut off the skull plate and clean it thoroughly. If you want to do a Euro mount, either have someone there do it or bring your own pot to boil it in.

There are places in Texas with CWD, it is not a joking matter or just an inconvenience for you. Take a little time, do the right thing.

This. As a retired taxidermist, I suggest that you take a few critical measurements that your taxidermist will need before you cape out your deer and remove the skull plate and horns.

coming from Texas into Arkansas, we deboned all the meat before we left. Arkansas will allow nothing but deboned meat and a cleaned skull plate.

I thought about doing that (hunt in AR and travel through MS to get home to NOLA), but we just deboned them at camp this year. It's not that hard, it saves space in the cooler and gives you a head start on processing.

I will miss my bone in roast and my woman was disappointed because she likes making bone broth soup. It's better than getting a ticket or spreading a problem around.

This is a meat hunt, not a trophy hunt. Texas requires you keep "proof of sex" with the quarters, shoulders, and backstraps. "Proof of sex" is defined as the head.

Louisiana now says "no heads can be brought in to state."

I don't see how being quartered helps. Not trying to be difficult, but maybe I'm missing something.

When we hunted in Oklahoma, we obviously had to drive through Texas. Due to their requirement for sex identification, we kept the sex organs on one of the quarters. Just be careful when skinning it and leave that piece hanging on

Yea, real easy to leave a piece of the dick attached to a hindquarter.
