That deer I killed last week I shot w a Hornady Precision Hunter round. It literally blew up inside the shoulder I hit. The shock must’ve blew everything up because it didn’t even fully penetrate the ribs on the shot side.
It was a steep quartering away angle and the deer only ran about 30 yards so I am willing to give it another go but I am nervous

How heavy was the bullet and what caliber? How long was the shot?

Thanks for the info. I always hunt with Federal Premium ammo, it's expensive - but nothing compared to the sunk costs already in the hunt (license, tag, travel, time, etc).

I've been using Hornady GMX for a few years now and have had nothing but positive experiences. Always have a pass through on both hogs and deer. When I'm cleaning the animal, it looks like a bomb when off on their insides. Never had to track farther than 100 yds.

poly tips = designed for 500+ yds, once velocity has decreased. 200yds and less it is a fragmenting round
PSP(pointed soft point) covers all whitetail needs as long as super high velocity is avoided

Accubonds prove this isn't a true statement

I sighted all of my rifles to Hornady Precision Hunter in the off-season. This was in response to two very bad experiences with Barnes on two bucks last year on two different properties. One with my 270 and another with a 30-06. Both resulted in me finding the deer well after coyotes and buzzards. Both had pencil thin exits. They died, but not very quickly.
Shot a doe last week and had a very good exit through lungs and a blood trail a blind man could follow. She only ran 35 yards and I was happy with the reults. I have not had any misfire issues

Accubonds are the original exception to the ballistic tip rule. These days there are more with the barnes ttx and other solid copper ballistic tip bullets out there.

I hate making excuses
But I always shoot federal premium. Hornady was patterning well out of my new 300. Decided to shoot it
Last day of trip, nice bull elk lined up after waiting on the herd to stop running. Squeeze trigger and click. Damn dud... elk start running again and I guess I rushed second shot, hit him back a little and didn’t recover. Found blood but elk is a tough SOB. He ran few hundred yards into the park and we couldn’t go after him.

From what im gathering with the Hornady precision ammo is if you hit any bone the bullet just shatters. I had one last year I think it happened to and I never found that deer but just thought I jerked the shot. When I saw what happened with this deer last week I realized its just the ammo. Accurate, but doesn't stay together.

I thought the precision was supposed to have decent weight retention? Now that makes me nervous

Like I said, ive found personally that if you miss both sides of the ribs and don't hit any bones you're just fine. However I hit spine and shoulder and both times the bullet fragmented. These were long shots too. Should only fragment up close with shots less than 25 yds.

Not rifle but I had some very poor performance with hornady muzzleloader bullets. Poor blood trails and had one quartering to yearling that didnt even pass through.

The bullet not working is a valid excuse dude

Been using the American Whitetail in 30-06 for four years now and have never had any trouble.
My daughters .243Am. Whitetail missed fired once while pointed at a doe. She wqs still able to reload and take the doe but I was pretty pissed at the time about it.
I once had a Winchester Ballistic Tip separate in flight hitting the buck in the lungs with the inner lead portion and in the arse with the jacket.
We thought I had shot a deer someone else had just shot until I skinned him out and recovered the bullet and jacket.

Hornady LEVERevolutions for my 45-70 are the shite and have never failed. Always provide a good blood trail, if the deer even moves after the shot that is.

??????? Hate hornady. Lost a good buck with a 45-70 and hornady some years back. Know for sure I caught at least one lung but think bullet broke apart and didn’t make it out. 3 hours of waiting before tracking and over 400 yards no recovery.

I bought my wife a Model 7 in 7-08 a few years ago. We broke it in and used Hornady 140's (bonded) with moderate success. I switched to Winchester Ballastic Silver Tips (Nosler Accubonds Lubalox) and groups tightened up and it has dropped several deer since. I know several on here hate Winchester ammo but it works for us.
I've never had Hornady ammo shoot a consistent group in numerous calibers.

Hornady is garbage, Barnes FTW.

Just because it's a. 45-70. Those bullets are horrible performers out of .30-30 in my experience.
