I used this for reference when building mine. Like I said, I think 24x24 is a little on the large side for a 90 gallon tank, that said, if I were building it again today, I would still do the same size, only change I would make is to make the v a little more steep, would allow for even more air flow when you get a big bed of coals and reduce the volume a little bit too

Curious...
That firebox hasn't destroyed those tires?
Posted on 10/12/22 at 2:53 pm to Pepperidge
Not yet. I was fairly concerned that was gonna be an issue when I built it. That area right there next to the tire is actually a void area the way I have the v bottom welded in the fire box, so that certainly helps. I've got a set of card iron wheels on hand cause I figured those rubbers would eventually fail, but that's the 3rd cord of wood I've run through it so far and they are still doing fine
Posted on 10/12/22 at 2:55 pm to CaptJJ
Is there anything in the box or is the wood/fire just on the floor?

capt JJ you are the one on hull truth who had that big skiff set up to hunt venice? If so post some pics, used to like your posts there

Ha, yeah that was me. I hadn't been on the hull truth in years.
I'll have to go pull some pictures off an old computer if I can find them of my old Chandeleur Skiff. If I can find them I'll start a thread on here about it. I've hi jacked this gentleman's smoker build thread bad enough already.

I picked up an old Oklahoma Joe off the side of the road and refurbished it last year. I purchased a harbor freight welder for the project. The firebox was completely rusted through so I built a square box from scratch. The welds are terrible but it actually cooks pretty well.
Now that the weather is cooling off I am thinking about building a better stand/wheels for it.

I love metal boat builds. Can you start a thread on some interesting designs you've done? I remember seeing a Boatright offering where it came the nose was pointed and upturned like a lake style skiff. I haven't seen anyone make one similar.

Look for Caster deals right now on Amazon. I got some 5" ones for 15% off yesterday. Who knows if they'll be any good, but they supposedly can handle 1800 lbs. Don't think I'll get to half that, even using 1/4+ plate for the fire box. And thick arse channel iron for the collector.

that thing is badass!! You have quite a talent. Would love to learn how to weld like that.
Quick question out of curiosity. What was the logic of having the chimney on the firebox side of the smoker and not the the other end?
I only ask because I would figure you would want the air/heat draw across your cooking surface. Am I wrong to think that??
on another note, I have a aluminum crawfish cooker that was given to me that needs some metal work done. would you be interested in helping a brotha out?

Thats why it's called a "reverse flow" smoker, because the smoke supposedly channels over to the left side of the cooker, than back across the grates for a second time, and then out.

Yep, above drawing is spot on. It's a reverse flow. I'm super pleased with how it works. You can flow a tremendous amount of air through it, smoking wings on the too rack can crisp up like they have been flash fried.
I'll start a build thread on it here in the next few days when I have a minute, as not not further hijack Mr Ruby's project.

Go ahead and post as much as you like. Any higher end offset smoker ideas/tips are welcome.

Posted on 10/13/22 at 6:30 pm to GREENHEAD22

What's up baw. Glad to here the boats holding up.
Swore I was gonna slow down, and ended up doing more welding and fab work this year then I've ever done, and still working my regular 40hr job.
I bought 70 acres we gonna build on about 20 mins NW of my current place, actually butt down to thousands of acres of public bottoms land swamp, caught a few frogs back in there this summer, but hadn't been once to spot you talking about.

That is awesome man. We just had our 2nd son a month ago so I feel your pain on being bowed up.
A couple more years and I'm hoping we will be in a spot to buy acreage and build.

You do, traditional offsets are as you describe. His is beautiful and the reverse flow does provide a more even heat across the cooking surface. However, it is a diminishing return as size increases. Once you get to 250 and definitely 500 gallon sizes, the heating is easy to control.
I absolutely love offsets and cook nearly every weekend in the cooler months.

One of our posters modified my old Ok Joe into this fan driven reverse offset.
