With pistols, you get what you pay for. You WILL NOT find a quality weapon for $300. If you could up that budget to $500, go with a Glock or a Springfield. Those are the lowest priced quality pistols.

My buddy has one he bought at a gun show for $150. It jams once every other magazine.

Hijack- why are HiPoint carbines in such demand? Is this a different country or is the action something they do well?

1. First mistake -- limiting choices to $300. Go borrow some money. Or save up until you have $600. Or keep looking until you find a decent USED Glock, Sig, HK or M&P.
Buying a $300 pistol is just throwing away $300.
If the pistol is for self-defense, you're clearly not putting a very high value on your life.
2. Second mistake (assuming it's for self-defense) is looking for a .380. If you can't afford a reliable gun, you can't afford ammo for the .380 --- and it's a poor choice for self-defense (unless, of course, you're a really great shot, under pressure -- in which case you may be OK with a .22LR.)
3. Seriously, look for a decent used pistol of a reliable make.
Your best choice with a limited budget is (a) find a really beat up, ragged, old Glock, and (b) send that ragged gun to Glock's facility (in Smyrna, GA).
Glock will inspect every part, and replace any part that is worn, or has been superseded by a newer design. They do this at no charge to the owner. You'll end up with the equivalent of a new gun, functionally.
Of course the exterior of the gun will still be "blemished" (beat up) -- but some folks here will tell you that anything you can do to alter the appearance of a Glock is an improvement.

They work best with Tapco mags and steel-cased ammo.

Go used if $300 is your budget.
