Thinking about getting my oldest son one for Christmas. He is 15 and hunts with a 270 during youth and gun season. He loves to hunt and I want him to be able to hunt primitive weapon next year. Any of you have any experience with this gun? It will be a 45/70 whatever I get.

I have one and like it. Make sure to spend the extra money on good mounts and a quality scope.

Id recommend a 35 wheelen and some sort of recoil shoulder pad; thats alot of gun for a 15yr old, but I know some 15yr olds are bigger than others and he may be able to handle the recoil

I’m definitely getting a good scope for it. He’s 6’2 220 so he’s ok with a little kick. He’s bigger than the old man lol

I second the 35 Whelen cartridge recommendation. Great deer cartridge. My CVA single shot likes the Hornady Superformance 200 Grain Soft Point.

Not from Henry and not right now. I've been sending emails trying to get them to produce this, they offer a .357/38 and if I knew the barrel could stand the pressure I'd have one re-chambered. I've shot the .308 version and it is sweet.

A popular rechamber of the handi rifles was to 357 maximum. To which they would hand load to supposedly rival a 35 Remington. Not exactly a 35 whelen though.

They're making a .3030 with a loading gate now

They've been expanding the hell out of their product line. Cant wait for them to bring out a bolt action. I love the company.

My middle son has a SS scout in 7mm-08. It’s a fine rifle. The oldest likes a wood stock.

I have it in .308. It is my go to rifle now. I have a ruger .270 and ruger .308 but I love the Henry. It's a little heavy but has no recoil. Both of my kids enjoy shooting it also. If you get one make sure you get the Henry scope mount rail for it. No other mounts will work.

Wonder why Henry doesn't make it in .35 Whelen?

I agree but I want one for the primitive season and those calibers won't fly

I have an H&R .444 and my son has an H&R .35 Remington. Both are good, but I had no idea Henry made a single shot. 45/70 is a helluva round.
