Quick back story she’s 18 and enjoys hunting, and stands to inherit about 400 acres of some very good hunting property. Since she was 12-13 she has used my 35 Whelan and my automatic 30-06, with no problems. Longest shot would be no more than 200 yards.

I was wanting to get her a nice new rifle that will probably be her first and last. Was thinking of the Weatherby 7mm-08 Camilla.

My question is availability of ammo going forward and 7mm-08 seems to less available than the Creedmore 6.5. (Which has been suggested). So I come to guys that would know, and recommendations welcome. To late to get and use this year but would like to purchase in the spring and get ready for 2022 season.

First and only? .308. Second, third, fourth, 99th? .308.

I'd personally go with an AR10 but a more traditional rifle may be more to your liking.

Begarra or tikka in 308 or 6.5 would be my pick . I bought my 13yr daughter a begarra b14 ridge in 6.5 and put a vx3 on it this fall. She loves it and I carried it a few times and im pretty sure I’m gonna buy another.

Oh frick yes. Thats a fineeeee bangstick.

Don't let ammo stress you out too much. 100 rounds of hunting rifle ammo goes a longggggg ways, and you can find 100 rounds without too much effort.

My daughter’s sweet 16 gift from me was an AR in 300 Blackout done in tiffany and robin egg blue. Will do anything she needs for hunting and can be used for home defense.

If you want to go for strictly a hunting rifle then I would go .243 due to ammo available and it will handle those 200 yard shots. My daughter also has one of those.

Get her a nice rifle and scope setup and it will be all she needs.

Good luck!

The Weatherby Vanguard Camilla is beautifully crafted rifle. My youngest daughter has one. With the stock angled away a little and a high comb it fits good. Her's is also in 7mm08. We spent about a year looking for a tradional wood stock rifle for her. As soon as she saw it online that was it. She had to wait another 6 months to get it in 7mm08. Her first scope was a really nice Trijicon 3x9. She missed a javelina at about 125yds. They are on the smallish side of game animals and we hunt out west so I got her and her sister some Nikon 4x12-40 on clearance. A 4x12 may make a 200yrd shot a little easier but is not really needed.
As far as ammo, I had about 10 boxes before the shortage started so I'm good. But have been checking differant stores and on line the past year or so and could have about another 20 boxes. Though they wouldnt all be the same brand or gr. Good luck in your search.
My vote is for the 7mm08.

Ammoseek has plenty 7mm 08. Some pricier than others. Get it over the 6.5cm and don't look back.

Just based off ammo availability .243 or .308 will do the job just fine at those ranges.

I have a Ruger American Compact 7mm-08 that I love, but I just bought the Ruger American Predator 308 that I have a suppressor on. It doesn’t kick a whole lot more but is a bigger gun. I’d recommend both of them.

Excellent choice, you can get it in the Mark V action or the Vanguard action. I bought my wife a Vanguard Camilla in 7-08 and it's a shooter, she's killed 3 this year with it.

I'm not familiar with the Savage but they make a long gun designed for a woman also, might be worth looking at.

Browning X Bolt 100 percent

.308 for easy ammo
.270 for classic
.6.5 harder to find not if you stock up

Definitely the X Bolt

I was in your position last year except I was buying for myself. I was looking for a 7mm-08 but wound up going with a Bergara Premier Highlander 6.5 creedmoor based on a recommendation from one of my dad’s good friends. At the time it was really difficult to find a rifle I wanted that was chambered in 7mm-08, and 6.5 creedmoor ammo was much more widely available. Both calibers can shoot a wide variety of projectiles, have very little recoil, and are plenty capable of killing whitetail deer. She’ll be happy with whatever you choose.

The last rifle I bought was a .308 Winchester Model 70 Black Shadow. I think it would be a perfect rifle for woman.

Congratulations for being an involved dad, UnoMe. I wasn't familiar w/ the Weatherby Vanguard Camilla until you referenced it. It looks like a nice gun that'd be a good choice. Yes, the Weatherby Vanguard line of guns are made by Howa. Howa makes good guns. In previous posts I've mentioned my satisfaction w/ a 20 Vartarg handgun I built last year using a Howa Mini Action. I endorse Howas. As far as what cartridge to recommend, that poses an interesting problem. Yes, 7-08 ammo has been hard to find this year, like lots of ammo. But, you've got 9 mos or so to find factory ammo, start handloading or find someone who'll handload for you. OTOH, 6.5 Creedmore ammo is easier to find. Last weekend I visited family in Lafayette and found myself in Lafayette Shooters. They didn't have much hunting ammo, but what little they had was 308 Win and 6.5 CM. There are a lot of 308 rounds that are good for deer hunting, but that's not true w/ the CM. A lot of the factory ammo for the CM uses match bullets that's not optimal for deer hunting. Although you might find CM ammo on the shelves, it's possible not much of it would be good for deer hunting.

I really like the 7-08 and have killed 9 deer w/ my 7-08 handgun. When my son started deer hunting, I bought him a 308. But a few years ago I came across a great deal on a T/C Compass in 7-08 so I bought it for a grandkid's deer rifle. My recommendation to you would be 7-08>308>>>>6.5 CM. Whatever you buy, start working on finding ammo NOW.

Bought my son a Browning X-Bolt in 7MM-08 when he was 9-10 years old. Terrific gun, I have snitched it and shot a couple of animals with it over the years. Accurate, low recoil, and a (IMO) beautiful gun.

my goal is to keep erryone on the same caliber, you never know when the gub'mint gonna step in and make ammo much harder to get. If you have to move to hand loading, it would be much easier for erryone to use the same round.
