I bought myself a Rossi stainless octagon barrel .44 mag last year. I checked out the Henry but took the Rossi after looking at the fit and finish. It is a well built rifle. May not be your thing but I wouldn’t overlook the Rossi just because it doesn’t have the Henry name.

I have had a Winchester since I was a kid.

I'm looking for a 357 lever action as well to go with a couple revolvers. I do have a Henry Big Boy 35 Remington with a side gate. It's a ton of fun to shoot & amazingly I've been getting lotsa Remington Core-lokt for it lately at Academy. My Henry doesn't like the Hornady Leverevolution.

All hail the great Paul Harrell. I can listen to him read the phone book, let alone all things firearms.

I don’t care who makes it, I just want quality, side gate, ability to mount a scope, and doesn’t look like shite.

Ai’ll check out Rossi

Tell me more about the JM stamp. Read yalls post while in the woods with my brothers 30-30 and noticed the jm stamp. I think this gun is from the 60s if I had to guess

Pre-remington marlins are stamped JM on the barrel, "john marlin" i believe. It just means its a marlin-built marlin, not a remington built marlin (remlin you'll see it called).

Not sure when the buyout happened. My 2007 336 is stamped JM. They command a higher price, generally regarded to be much higher quality than the remington models.

Ruger is supposed to be putting 1895's on the shelf before Christmas. We shall see. Im sure they'll be damn fine rifles.

Yeah,, rugerremmarlin heard that some ol boy named downshift was not comfortable with anything smaller than .336 caliber so they are releasing the 45-70 first!!!
Lol not sure why the t-Rex caliber is such a hot commodity but I’m just glad they are finally gonna start building some, I plan to get one and cute it down to 16in and put a red dot on it and it will probably be my 95% gun

I’ve got the Marlin and it’s really fun to shoot, especially 38 special. I dressed it up with a gold plated ghost ring sight and my son shot his first deer with it (357).

I know you didn't mention 30-30 but the Marlin 30-30 I deer hunted with as a kid is such a good gun. Not the best option for deer these days (as in you might be tracking some) but I've never had one run more than 20 or 30 yards. But If that is not what you are looking for, I would get as close to whatever looked like that (level style/ hammer/ etc) as the marlin 3030 in your caliber of choice. Good luck on you search.

I’m a bit of a lever fan. I’ve got a few vintage Winchester’s and Marlins.

If being honest; my favorite is the Savage 99.

The rotary magazine design and hammerless action were so far ahead of their time. Allows you to use spitzers instead of flat bullets. The 300 Savage may be the most underrated cartridge ever.

Haven’t been made in 20 years. Unlikely to ever come back. A shame. Occasionally found for a few hundred bucks online.

I’m pretty sure this is going to be my next purchase. Then I’ll have to decide on a scope

Must have side loading gate.
- I want it to be in 357mag / 38spc because I’m well setup for reloading that caliber.
- Not sure if I want a large loop or the standard size
- budget is around a thousand.

Best option is to find a used JM Marlin 1894

Winchester 1892’s are wonderful rifles, not sure if the old ones were made in .357.
I think the new production ones break your $1000 budget.
If you want to mount a scope that’s probably not the rifle to get.

Rossi makes a ‘92 clone that has a much friendlier pricetag.
Still no scope mounting if that’s important to you.
I have read they are good guns for the money.

Henry has lots of options. I know their larger calibers offer a side loading gate, but don’t know if they started making the side gate on their pistol caliber rifles.

Uberti makes a couple Winchester clone rifles like the ‘73
I think they check off all the boxes you listed, except maybe the big loop.
