I found a Yamaha 70 hp 2 stroke 2003 model oil injection that is in mint condition. I went and saw it and it basically looks brand new. Owner claims it only has about 30 hrs on it. He even offered to put it on my boat for me and let me take it out before I commit to buying. He wants 5000 for it. What yall think?

That particular motor is damned near a quarter century old, realizing it doesn’t have much time on the engine, but the wiring, hoses, and modules/sensors are 23 yrs old. Personally, I’m thinking whatever you’d need to pay for a new one, take 50% and offer that. Will still need a water pump impeller, service/oil change lower unit, maybe fuel pump, lines, oil lines, spark plugs, etc…

As Rich says….look very closely at the wiring harness under the cowling. It is too complex to make your own and exhorbetently expensive to buy.

5gs for a 23 year old motor sounds steep how are you verifying only 30 hrs. Super low hours aren’t always a good thing btw

Those motors are bullet proof, there are plenty merc 40’s of same vintage running today. Yamaha enduros were and are still being used in Africa and S America today.
Probably need to drop all three carbs and clean them, hoses are simple as is impeller & lube. Would disconnect the auto oil and mix going forward.
What length & width boat will it be mounted on?

Tiller? Electric start? Tilt and Trim on the hamdle? SS prop?

If all of the above 5k

If not 3k and remove the oil injection as soon as you get it.

A new one will run approx $11k. So 5k is about half.

Being that old it probably needs new oil pumps, water pumps, etc. But its a bulletproof motor.

I'm actually more afraid of older motors with less hours. Those things need to be run.

That motor is 23 years old and harder each day to find part for it when it breaks. Casting alone at that age is starting to have an issue regardless of hours ran. Id not give a penny over $3K-$3500. Its a money pit

I have a 1990 36 year old 25 hp Mercury 2 stroke engine.

I’m convinced I could buy a new one today and the new one would die before the old one.

And I hit many, many rocks. But I hit them slowly.

Parts availability for the 2003 Yamaha 70 HP (70TLRB) outboard is generally good for maintenance and service items, though some internal, electrical, or major cowling components are becoming obsolete. Popular aftermarket and high-quality OEM parts remain widely in stock.

Completely stock with controls they go for 3-5k now.

Great motors. Just IMO the 90hp is same weight and way more performance.

Very valid point, that is the reason I got a F70Yam over a Tahatsu or Suzuki. The made the jump to the larger frame at 70HP while the Yam did not.
