GMM,
You've got a world of options available. Since this is primarily going to be a range gun, I'd go w/ a larger gun, preferably a full size gun or possibly a "compact." I'll be the first to admit that I'm very partial to a single stack gun, like the Shield, for cc. On the other hand, it sounds like cc will be rare for you, if at all.
Of the guns you mentioned, I'd consider the 1911 or the 2022. Other possible contenders would include the guns in the M&P, Glock and Springfield XD/XDM series or Ruger SR9, either full size or compact. If you got one of the "compact" guns from one of these series, e.g. the Glock 19, it would be a fine range/home defense gun and could also be used for periodic cc w/o too much inconvenience. If you like a SA/DA action like your prior Beretta, the 2022 (or some other similar gun like the Beretta Storm or Stoeger Cougar) would be a fine choice. Personally, I don't like SA/DA type actions, but that's not my choice for you.
There are less expensive 1911's on the market if you want to consider that option. The Ruger seems to be a good 1911. Since the Commander is new, it will be a while before we'll see very many on the market.

Watch my video so you can decide exactly what ROLE you want the firearm to fill. You seem to be a bit unsure of it.
