I bought the SPOT X last year for my wife to keep tabs on my offshore adventures and to allow me to text basic updates. I chose the Spot X for the ability to be a standalone device with full keyboard and not have to connect to my phone.
It doesn't work under my t-top and it needs to be kept vertical and have clear view of sky all around to work effectively.
I'll probably sell it and get the Garmin Inreach Mini even though it need to connect to my phone to freely text. I have Garmins in the big boat and it can interface with them so that's a plus.

It sucked out there today. I heard coast guard call off the pompom around 930, boat found. Assuming that was these guys?

I have one.
I have to keep the SpotX in a cup holder on the gunnel to send a message. Sometimes still doesn't work because the top block most of the sky view.

No. It does work in the woods.

Like laying on a table? Yes

I follow these things because of the question I debate in my head for a future offshore boat about single versus twins (or more)
The biggest concern if you're going that far out is to have multiple ways to contact help. It greatly increases your chances of survival if the unthinkable happens.
For $200, you can have a waterproof marine VHF radio with GPS that clips to your belt.
After that, the decision between the redundancy of twins vs single is less likely to be one of life and death. Twins, though. Always twins. Fuel or electrical problems will kill all your propulsion unless you have two fully independent drives, but engine problems just slow you down with twins.

I know the owner, him and his son are safe.
Tried to get info from a friend who spoke to the guy towing him in. He was short and would tell him later.
Long story short, doesnt matter how nice and big your boat is, shite happens. Always have a plan and tell people where you are going.
My guess is he lost all power. He is out there every weekend and knows it very well. Glad him and his son are safe. This is a wake up call for me as I’m always out that way as well, i have a hand held vhf for backup to my vhf already.

How do you afford a boat like that but now spend $400 for a Garmin inreach?
I don’t go anywhere without it.

Damn. I guess he doesn't have 2 seperate circuits or whatever. I would be fricking pissed at whoever set that up.

Starlink is going to be a game changer for offshore once its up and running.
Buy an extra dish and cable for the boat, bring modem with you for instant internet.

A. buddy of mine is building up an catamaran with twins. Hes setting it up to isolate the entire system from each other if needed. Electrical and fuel.
We were walking it out the other day looking at. Hes doing a jam up job.

The pictures I've seen show an actual dish like Direct TV that you have to aim and lock into place. That would be a major pain. And only good in emergencies. Hopefully they will offer a dome that fits on RVs and boats and all that.
I could see myself buying an old work boat and parking it at Chandaleur for the summer. If you're gonna work remote, might as well be all the way remote.
