Ol' 742 in .30-06 was king of the dog woods.
Tell Em - 742 Woodsmaster 30-06 with the short barrel and no iron sights. I had a 4X Redfield and was deadly with it. This was my first deer gun and I killed many with it. Still hunting, running dogs, out of the truck window etc etc

Back when dogs were ran on KNF, mornings were never an issue since you get out before daylight. Evenings I seldom had issues but at times if I got there late there’s be guys hanging out around my entrance and I’d talk to them. Either they were about to move and I’d just go on in or I’d go to one of my other spots, probably only happened 2-3 times over 10-15 years though. I’ve killed quite a few deer in the late season due to dogs running them by my spot. Not much different then having a great spot and pulling up to another still hunter in your area and having to go somewhere else

So it’s ok to inconvenience everyone for their dogs? I have to show up late to my spot bc of some dog hunter and his/their dogs?

Get your dogs ready at your house and not on a public road blocking everyone else.

Did you ever have dog hunters show up demanding half the deer because their dogs were running it?It never happened to me but I’ve heard several stories from other people.

No not ever, and people more than likely lied to you

I've never had it happen personally been it's pretty common where I grew up, if you killed a deer in front of someone's dogs they got half.

If I was hunting alone even on public land and a deer ran by me and I shot it. I don’t care what caused the deer to come there, I’m not giving up any meat from it. Dog hunters never did that to me, if they would have they’d have been disappointed in my response

My stepdad always owned the pack at our club and this was an understood custom, but I never saw him take deer meat from anyone. They would always offer but we never needed it.

I'll chime in. I grew up on Cheaha, right beside the Talladega national forest and my dad is one of the most passionate deer hunters that I know. It's a year round thing for him. Game cameras, moving tree stands, scouting out trails, planting food plots, etc. We spent many a' offseason working out on the back side of our property to make the habitat deer friendly. When the first day of deer season came around, he'd always put me in what he thought was the best spot. Shortly after daylight, a herd of rat-arse dogs would come barreling through our property and you'd hear the p.o.s. v-6 fords with cherry bomb mufflers fire up and circumnavigate everything that was private property and cut the dogs off on the other side. To this day it happens pretty much every weekend during deer season, no exaggeration. I think dog season ends 2 weeks before stalk season now (a small bone thrown to anti-dog hunters in an attempt to appease them), but the damage has already been done by then. Deer have become nocturnal by then and their habits are completely disrupted.
Hunters who use dogs to hunt deer are the worst "outdoorsman" and I have zero respect for them. They have complete disregard for property, the environment, other hunters, and the deer. It is nearly impossible for a game warden to catch their illegal activities because, like many of you said, dogs can't read signs. And, without the warden seeing them releasing dogs on private property, there's no was to cite them for anything. A retired neighbor of my dad's has been spending a lot of time and effort trying to bring awareness to lawmakers and local officials. The meetings always seem to take place way far away from the actual area of concern (Montgomery and Mobile seem to be the most popular places) so that makes it difficult for affected citizens to go and voice their opinions.
However, you give me 4 beagles and a nice swamp and we'll hunt rabbits all day long.

Yes at a dog club it's always been custom from most clubs Ive hunted with. But on public land, it's widely overstepping for someone to expect or even ask for meat from a random other hunter because there dogs were on it.

We put standers out in a line about 100 yds apart from each other and then drove the dogs towards them. Everyone had shotguns with buckshot. A rifle would have been an excellent way to kill a person or a dog.
And buckshot far more so, I was on a drive 25 years ago that required a airlift for a hunter from errant buckshot 100 yards away.

They drive around in old shitty trucks and turn their dogs loose at 8 in the morning just past our property line. They then line the road on the other side and wait for the dogs to push deer out of our thickets because their woods don't hold deer. They wait until the wind is right to do this.

They did the same thing on our property, put the dogs out one side of our property and they lined up on road other side of the property.Thing is our dog season didn’t start until the rut was pretty much over in our area so it didn’t really affect my hunting.

Back to the original question which I don’t think was ever answered,I believe the adjacent landowners/ residents made numerous complaints to the management of the national forest. That’s what started the process,I believe, then the anti-dog hunters piled in.I wasn’t involved since I lived few miles from the forest and I wasn’t anti-doghunting per se but I know it got pretty ugly.
I guess you could call the Catahoula Ranger District and ask them:(318)765-3554 or (318)765-3555. what got the process started.
