I’ll have a day to explore tomorrow and would like to do some of the trail. I’m working in the Charlotte area. Hot Springs, NC seems to be the closest town it passes through.

Any info is appreciated.

Go to Mt. Rogers / Grayson Highlands. The trail runs through there, it’s closer to Charlotte and it’s better land.

I did a day hike out of there going north. It’s a steep climb at the start with a lot of switchbacks to get to the ridge overlooking town and the river. Then a long walk in the woods. Decent hike though.

Not as close to you, but the NC stretch I like is hiking the balds around Roan Mountain. You can start at Carver’s Gap where they have a parking lot.

Going to be cold af. Maybe even a lot of snow up there.

If you do t want to travel, you can hike Crowders Mountain in Gastonia.

That’s 25 min away.

However if you want to sightsee, it’s not like the AT.

I hiked a portion of it in Maine, and by a portion of it I mean it crossed the highway we were on and I stopped, got out the car and and walked around a minute and took a picture of the sign

The Elk Garden trailhead has free parking and starts you on the AT. That area is huge and has a ton to offer great mix of forest, streams and open area, pretty unique for the east coast. Grayson Highlands state park is popular for having wild ponies and longhorns.

Just outside of Asheville is Max Patch. Easy to access from your vehicle, Incredible views and a decent section to hike.

You can try the travel board too. I know I've seen people discuss their hikes of the AT on there before.

NC makes you buy permits and whatnot in certain areas, check on that first.

I think I’m just gonna bite the bullet and drive up to the Virginia line.

Doubt you'll want to go to grayson highlands now. 0 degrees and 10-12 inches of snow and more in spots. Wind is brutal there this time of year. That's in the valley. It'll be much worse at elk Garden
