I just watched a Joe Rogan interview with one of Steve Rinellas buddies.

He was talking about terrifying grizzly bears are when encountered in the true wild.

Who here has had real life encounters with a grizzly?

My neighbor use to live in Alaska.

He told me a story of a coworker and a buddy that were out hiking. The coworker had a shotgun on his shoulder and the buddy was behind him.
They surprised a grizzly which was on them before he could get the gun off his shoulder.
The bear pounced on the coworker and messed him up pretty good then turned to the friend who got up in the middle of a trees roots. The bear ripped the guys clothes off of him but never could get ahold of him.

It went back the coworker and jumped on him a few times and then left them.

The buddy went to get help. The coworker had his scalp ripped off. Just a small piece help it on. The coworker flipped it back over and put his baseball cap back on and walked out.

Neighbor told me that some of the best plastic surgeons are in Alaska because of bear attacks.

I have never been charged but have been warned a few times. Jaw popping, making huffing sounds.

The ABC islands locally are loaded with them. 18 year old was killed on Admiralty a couple of weeks ago at a minesite. His second day on the job

Gosh damn!!! I guess people are accustomed to living among bears so hiking to them is no big issue.
The guy on the podcast was talking about how insanely fast they are - they can close distance in a matter of seconds.

Was it a situation where you hiked into them or saw them from far off and they came towards you? One of the meateater episodes showed a sow with cubs...they came to investigate and ended up bluff charging.

Also, the bear laying down in that pic looks like a monster

If that is true which I doubt, considering the rarity of bear attacks in Alaska they are not making much of a living.

Only one time. It was years ago at the Longbranch Saloon in Mound, LA. I got charged by a female grizzly. I made it outside and to the truck before she laid her paws on me. I left a man behind, though. He made it out a little while later but he was quite disheveled and his shirt was on backwards. I think she just toyed with him then let him go.

Have seen one on the walking trails in Eagle River. Turned around and walked back to my brother's house.

The day we drove to Denali and checked into our hotel, we were warned us about a man being killed by a bear near the dumpster the day before. My mom wanted to drive back to Eagle River, but it was too late.

Oh, various encounters. I walked up on one eating sedge grass the other day. She stared me down but wasn't interested in me too much.

There are places bears gather and that's the best places to watch. Usually near estuaries when salmon are running. There's a place called pack creek on Admiralty about 25 miles from here where Bears gather in large numbers to feed on salmon. It's an incredible chance to observe the monsters (ABC bears) doing their thing. Forest service has a viewing platform for the timid.

Bears eating salmon have no interest in humans so its fairly safe

I worked with this older woman who was quite the story teller. She was from Alaska and still had family up there.

She came to work kind of upset. I asked her what was wrong and she said her alcoholic brother in law was in the hospital again. He had gotten drunk and drove home. The bear got him when he was walking from his vehicle to his house.

The way she told the story you were expecting him to have wrecked his vehicle. It had an m knight shyamalan twist to the end, though.

Several years ago we were at Chilkoot Lake where the river comes out (above Haines, AK). There was a mother with two large cubs looking for salmon and a dozen people watching them. They bears really weren't interested in the people. I was shooting some photos from maybe 50 yards away and gradually got further from the car for better photos. Well, one of the cubs ran right in my direction, just playing I think. The mom was not happy, growled a bit, and followed. I walked quickly at a 90 degree angle into some woods and fortunately the mom left me alone. Stupid tourist behavior on my part.

The cub, the mom, and the family at a fish cleaning station with one of the cubs playing with a tackle box abandoned by the fisherman who got the hell out:

Probably Speedy. She's the most frequent visitor at that particular area. .

I got too touristy wth a cinnamon black bear and cubs on a trail. She's "bear 25" and hangs out near the Mendenhall Glacier. She was off a trail about 10 feet away and I got caught up taking pics. At one point she jumped up and took off right beside me after hearing a salmon splashing, kinda shook me for a minute.

Been a long time but I was 13 in Ketchikan, AK. Bears wanted nothing to do with us. We went to the dump. They just watched us for a few then left.

Seeing the first ones head raise up was a bit puckering. He was a big boy.

Eta...we drove to the dump but I got out with my mom's camera and walked towards the bears.

I was sent these Saturday

Trust me I will be more alert in a few weeks.

Here are a few other pics of the hunter

There's a place between Ketcikan and Wrangell called Anna Creek where you can watch black and brown bear fishing. It's like Pack Creek, the Forest Service only allows so many visitors a day and has observation decks.

Not my pics

One of the few places to see brown and black bears fishing together
