Got my first deer yesterday morning

on Cahaba WMA (Alabama), an 8 point. I was walking out from my spot at almost 10 am. He was bedded down to my left with a doe. I glassed him and counted at least six points. Shot him with my .35 Rem, iron sights at about 50 yards. He never got up. 100% luck. Didn't grow up deer hunting, was a small game/turkey hunter growing up in Eastern KY. Caught onto duck hunting from a coworker from Louisiana in the 90's. I have been deer hunting sporadically but was never successful until yesterday. Feels good.

Congrats. One of my bow hunting sons is quite familiar with the area. There are some good deer in and around Hoover, Helena, Pelham, etc.

I just stood there thinking "I can't believe I just shot a buck". Right after I told myself to get up and walk out because my kind of hunting wasn't working.

Enjoy that red meat. It doesn’t get any better. Venison has been feeding mankind for centuries.

Indeed. There's a monster I've seen off the WMA in Helena city limits three times in the last week. Private property. Puts my little 8 point to shame.

It only takes a few seconds to turn a hunt completely around. Congrats on a great one.

I’ve been hunting for almost 30 years and that still happens to me. But I’ve only killed around 25 deer. Not a whole bunch vs the average hunter.

Age it on the bone as long as possible up to 21 days. Then debone and make steaks. Thank me later. Oh, and don’t let it sit in ice water

Way to go Sir!
Be proud of that buck, you’ll never forget your first. Got the fever? I know I did after my first deer, and it’s never left me. To this day I get excited in the woods when the sun is coming up and the deer start moving. Never gets old.
Congrats buddy!

I'm off the backside of oak mountain st park off 11. 10 and 12 points are pretty common sightings. Friend of mine has a house whose back yard connects to the park, has a game camera that would make you drool.
