Vortex Viper 10x42’s are right there, I believe.

eta: I just bought the 12x50’s and love them.

My buddy had the 12x50 on our elk hunt and I was very impressed. A noticeable step up from my meoptas which don’t suck.

Cabelas had the 10x42 for 300 for Black Friday so I snagged a pair. Going to play with them at the lease tomorrow and see how they compare to the 12x.

How far are you normally glassing? Planning on using a tripod or window mount?

What's yall's opinion of the Leupold BX-4 Pro Guide 10x-42mm? Currently $599.

Agree that you can't go wrong with Meopta binos. I use the Optika HD 10x42s for the same purpose, and they ride around in the middle box of my truck for quick access the rest of the year. At under $400 for European glass, they are tough to beat.

Check optics planet, they had some good deals a couple weeks ago. Maybe a little on the low end for you but I got a pair of Vortex Diamondbacks that were regularly $279 for $124

Dumb question but - What separates the nicer ones versus the cheap shite on Amazon? I've been thinking of getting a cheaper pair so wondering what I'd be giving up.

A review of 24 affordable (under $600) 8x42 binoculars by Cornell Ornithology that came out December 7:

Celestron wins overall ($380)
Nikon Monarchs (M5 and M7) very good (Kowa too)
Opticron best for the money ($219)
Vortex still solid

It’s generally the coatings on the lenses and the actual lens quality. You may not notice in viewing quality at first but generally speaking, it becomes apparent when you are glassing for more than 30 seconds are so. Glassing for a full day with cheap binos=a migraine for me. you’ll also notice for glare, CA, and light gathering ability. People will say it’s all objective lens size, but the current 8x30s I have, blow the doors off the previous 8x42s and 10x42s I own.

Unfortunately, they are the old vipers they sold at cabelas. They had a huge step up in quality on the current versions. I had a warning post during that week because of that. The people at the store made it seem like they are the current version.

Athlon Cronus were great and clearer than current Vipers but suffered at low light. Leupold BX-4 were fantastic but they weren’t on sale. All these are a great leap over their budget options.

Best value optics I saw were Vortex Diamondback and Athlon Midas.

Highly recommend the 10x42 vipers or diamondbacks if on a budget. Just bought 10x42 Vortex vipers for scouting duck hunting etc. I’m sold on the vipers. Compared my old Bono’s with my vipers by glassing a monument plaque at work from 150 yards out. With my Nikon 10-22 x 50 actions I could not read the plaque. I could read verbatim the wording on the plaque with the vipers from about 150 yards out.

Friend has the 10x42 diamondbacks and the difference between the two is the vipers can see much better in low light conditions.
