Gonna try and build a 2011 update on the 2nd page, it’s done.

I've ordered the slide, frame and barrel so far to try and build a 2011.
I shot one a year or so ago and haven't been able to get it out of my mind since.
I'll order the rest of the component in the next few weeks and will try to get it all fitted.
I've rebuilt the internals of a 1911 frame so, I'm looking forward to getting this thing together.

What frame and slide did you go with?

Brazos:
Brazos 2011
Not quite ready to try my hand at fitting the slide to frame at this point. I'm sure that will come at some point.

Without a mill, the easiest way is to use sandpaper clamped to a sheet of glass with a straight edge (such as a level) as a backer to keep everything at right angles. Go slow and use a dykem pen to find high spots. Move down in grit size as you get close. Once the slide begins to fit the frame, use lapping compound to finish it off.

Very interesting. What are you hoping the end price ends up being?

I think I can finish it for less than $2300

That will be pretty badass when completed.
I didn't see what type of material that it is made from. What kind of finish is on the frame?

That's a pretty good price point for a 2011. I don't know if you venture over to brianenos forums, but you can find a lot of really good parts for 2011s in the classifieds. Lots of people ditch their plastic grips for the steel grips so you can find a good deal on them. I've been wanting to put a Cheely grip on mine for a while.

4140 pre-hard barstock.
I think I will ceracote the frame and slide.

I pondered this as well, but I think I'm going to end up just having Triarc build me one. Can get one with all the options I want for $3365 out the door, including an RMR/SRO cut with plate.

I linked really hard at buying a completed pistol but really just wanted to try my hand at building one. I realize this isn’t quite the same as hand fitting but it’s close enough for now.

How's that combat master running?

Sold it
When STI announced they weren't making them anymore, the prices shot up. I paid $3900, sold it for $5400.
I loved it and it's probably the best looking pistol I've ever laid eyes upon, but I would've been stupid not to capitalize. People paying Atlas/Infinity prices for what was essentially a dressed up DVC 3-Gun, just LOL
I also got a little pissed at STI because they wouldn't do an optic cut on it, they wouldn't sell me their new grip, etc. That company is all fricked up. They rename their model lineup every year (literally), they're moving to a more automated manufacturing process, they're starting to focus on carry 2011s over competition. Just totally lost IMO, and in the opinions of many others.

They lost me when they dropped the single stacks.

Yeah they had me scratching my head when they dropped their competition line totally. They didn't even phase it out, just shut it down. I guess there is more money out there in the tactical market than competition these days.

How much metal are we talking about, needing to be taken off?

Depends on the frame and slide but most likely a few thousandths.

Rize and myself are good friends with the lead engineer who has been with STI for over 23 years. In that time, the company has been sold 3 times and our friend has had 8 different bosses. During their peak production, STI had 125 employees and over 30 CNC machines to manufacture slides, frames, grips, etc...
Current owner realized there was limited profit and sales in building competition race guns. Since the industry has changed, the current business structure has shifted to Law Enforcement and Military. STI changed their name because the Center for Disease Control got rid of "STD" sexually transmitted disease, and it is now called "STI" sexually transmitted infection. Customers googling STI were immediately directing to topics on syphilis, gonorrhea, chlamydia, etc...
Staccato is producing close to 100 completed guns per day. Dozens of police forces around the country are now outfitted with Staccato pistols. IIRC, the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department recently took receipt of 2,200 pistols for their LEO's. Average pistol price is $3,500 …. do the math.
