Read through some old posts with same question. Looking for a good breeder. Any current suggestions? After reading the comments and talking to a breeder, I am now wanting a field golden. More athletic, less weight on hips and less shedding.

Might help if we know what you want the dog trained to do. Is this a house dog or a bird dog?

hunnington farms in Covington breeds beautiful dogs with great personalities for family pets. I had one and he was the best dog you could hope to have

However…he died of cancer at age 9 and upon researching this we discovered that their dogs have an unusual tendency towards early deaths. Just giving you all the info

had I known this, it wouldn’t have changed anything. Rusty was a prince

My parents had a couple that had the same fate. Incredible dogs tho. As good as it gets for house pets.

I know that is a popular breeder but was suggested to avoid for various reasons.

Really hoping Hubba Bubba sees this post. He posted a pic of his puppy a few years ago and mentioned his breeder

We had a wonderful Huntington golden that we had to put down at 5. Went with a breeder from Mississippi McDowell for our current one. She is leaner and more athletic than most goldens and great family dog. They are on Facebook. Dad was King and mom Sadie

I have one from here. Great dog. The sire had quite a bit of hunting test achievement. He has more energy than the golden I grew up with who was more of the show line.

We got ours here: LINK
She is absolutely beautiful and super sweet. Extremely goofy too, pretty sure that’s most goldens though.

I have 2 from this guy. A 1 year old and 2 year old. Both females. Two insanely different personalities. Both super sweet dogs though and no health problems at this stage. His dogs are a mix of show and field goldens. One of my dogs has a little more of the show breed qualities and the other seems like she's straight field golden. The field golden doesn't play bite but she loves to take her toys and sticks and haul arse across the yard. The older one is more show golden and is mostly lazy but she also likes to play fight a lot.

The guys setup is pretty cool. Seems like he really takes care of his dogs and has his property set up to prevent inbreeding. This is my opinion and I have very little experience with breeders however.

On a side note, and this is a me problem, but his website reads horrendously from a technical writer's standpoint. But I guess it doesn't take an english major to effectively run a breeding service.

I got one from Shoreside in Mobile. He is of the "field" golden physique. I really enjoy him but he is a handful, I think he was the alpha of his litter. I have him trained pretty well but he still tests the limits occasionally.

The couple ran the operation was kind of odd, although I kind of expect that in breeders. I think they let the pups go a few weeks too early and we had some minor health issues. I'd give them another chance though.

I have been around dozens of HF dogs. Some of them have been fine. Others not so much. My neighbor had two and they were a couple of the worst dogs I've ever been around, a lot of which had to do with her. Both died less than 10y/o from odd health issues. That's not to say you can't get a good dog from there, but they are known for inbreeding and significant health issues. I would stay away. Far too many other reputable golden breeders around.

Think carefully about what type of dog you're looking for, OP. Actual field bred goldens are very different dogs than bench bred goldens. I'm speaking in generalities and there are always exceptions, but field bred lines are going to be darker in color, more slender, more athletic, smarter, and more free thinking/independent. Bench bred lines are going to be lighter, stockier, and calmer - much more like an English lab. If you are looking for a house dog/couch potato that you can train to a moderate level of obedience, a bench bred dog is for you. Field bred dogs are going to be higher maintenance in the sense that the require significant exercise, training, and work/stimulation. I'm not saying that you can't get a very calm field bred dog, but if it's a true field bred golden, you owe it to the dog to provide it with that type of life. They are wonderful, fun dogs though and I don't see myself ever having another breed.

This is a good description. Our golden is a mix of both and fits squarely in the middle of both lines' characteristics

Very good post. The show breed are still energetic but they'll be lazy with you for more of the day. The field will be ready to go once the sun comes up, or a little earlier. I WFH periodically and by 3:00 both dogs are coming in ready to play. I'll be typing and they'll come nose my arm asking for pets. The field golden wants to play with the show golden. The show will indulge for a minute or two, and eventually the show will be laying there barking at the field as the field golden is sprinting laps around the yard, grabbing sticks and toys sprinting with it in her mouth. Both dogs are pretty obedient, but the field has more jumping issues than the show and can go harder longer. The field golden loves the pool and the show golden wants nothing to do with it.

My Lou is from there, just over a year old and the sweetest pup I've ever had.

Boarded him for the Mardi Gras break and he hasn't left my side since I got back Thursday

I have Goldendoodle from Huntington Farms. She’s a great family dog, 10 years old and only goes to vet for shots once a year. No problems with her at all. But, that may be due to her being mixed?
