Gill/Purse Seine Nets in Mississippi waters are impacting Speckled Trout fishery in Miss

Facebook Page (one of the many) that are talking about the problem
Petition website to end Purse Seine/Gill Nets in Miss for Speckled Trout
According to the various webpages there are over 200 Purse seine modified gill net licenses in Mississippi and each modified purse seine gill netter is catching over 2,000 pounds a day of speckled trout. There is a 50,000 pound quota in Miss that allows this but a number of the gill net license folks have come in from Florida and they are taking their catch to Venice, La or to other states to sell so the quota number isn't accurate as there are estimates they are taking between 150k-200k pounds of Specks in these nets.
A Miss wildlife agent watched a legal gill netter/seiner catch 6 trout over 10 pounds last week (two of those were over 12 pounds).
I would suspect some of the Louisiana trout are getting caught up in these nets too.

well duh........ thats why we outlawed them here, they were decimating the fish stocks here and im sure that will happen anywhere they are allowed to be used
FYI - gill nets are used in shallow water, purse seines are used off shore in deep water only because they go from surface to 30-40 feet deep

I'm sure the CCA will jump on this issue like they did the waterway issue. Wait never mind the CCA let this happen too because its been going on for years in Miss.

The most infuriating image is the guy standing in the boat with good size trout piled up to the top of his shrimp boots in bottom hold of this shitty mullet skiff.
Supposedly Wildlife & Fisheries Agent weighed and measured a recent net catch and there were several
8-10lb+ fish. One measured over 36"!

No doubt. This has blown up on the local FB fishing pages here. Shitheads

A ton of those nice restaurants you see on the Food and Drink Board get their food this way. Absolutely ridiculous.
At least we know there are (or were) some nice trout hanging around. Several 10+lbs.

I used to Gill net with my dad in Cameron before it was outlawed. Never once did we catch a speckled trout or redfish. We did catch flounder (intended target) and lots of hard head catfish.

I wish they would also outlaw skimming in the marsh bays. The amount of trout and flounder killed as bycatch is staggering. As a kid we caught flounder all the time down chauvin and montegut. Since skimmers came on the scene I can’t remember the last time I caught an eating size flounder.
Gill netting was blamed for the decline in reddish population. I am surprised it is still legal in MS honestly

Maybe they will since they may have some sort of chance of changing netting practices. The waterway issue in LA has no comparison in scale in MS or any other state, way more complicated that changing a fishing reg.

One thing that needs to be noted, and I think I have this right, is that Cat Island is the only one they’re netting because the other barrier islands are National Seashore protected or something like that. The other location I keep seeing mentioned is West bar and I’m not sure I know where that is besides somewhere on the East side.
MS needs to outlaw these nets ASAP. It’s blowing up. As much as social media and modern technology sucks, it shined a light on this issue.

Who do you think got gill nets banned in LA? The amount of hate CCA gets simply because they can’t please everyone all the time is rediculous. It would be like gun owners shite talking the NRA because your suppressor forms are taking too long to clear. Some things are out of their hands.
CCA is the single largest recreational fishing lobby in the region. If you want them to focus on specific issues, then get involved. I’m not even a current member, they don’t know me from Adam, and I get emails every other week basically begging me just to come be involved and voice my opinion.

CCA is a joke. To chicken shite to take a stance.

This X 10000
There wouldnt be red fish fishing at all on the gulf coast if CCA hasn’t stepped up in the 80s and did what they did. La was being pillaged by commercial fishermen with gill nets and purse seines.
How quickly people forget.

A stance on the purse seining?
Or are you mad about the HB391 garbage?

Careful. The mouthbreathers will come in here shortly and say that was a different organization that did that. The GCCA

It's always easier to sit behind a screen and criticize the work of others and ASSume you know exactly what goes on behind the scenes. Typically, they are Mental Midgets who have zero joy in life and want others to feel the same.

That’s great news for the fishery, terrible news for the honest commercial fisherman in MS. Time to run these oos guys out and ban nets. Locals with line and hook only
