I've got a Savage in .270 synthetic/blued with the fixed mag. The only thing I'd rather is that it has a hinged floorplate (for easier cleaning when it gets wet) and was stainless. Other than that I don't anything more.

Yeah. The trigger on the Savage is pretty sweet. I'm not really a fan of the black stock, stainless barrel on any guns so I bought mine with the intention of putting a new stock on it. Just haven't decided what yet.

As for the 375, yeah it's overkill, but so is the 35, 444, and 45-70. The only reason I'm wanting a 375 is because I have some open fields I hunt so I'm looking for the flattest shooting thing you can carry during primitive weapon season.

Eh..........maybe.

Savage has come a long way from being the step children of the hunting rifle world, and they have made up all that ground in the accuracy department (where it counts), but they are still the butt ugliest rifle in the deer woods. Keep in mind too that they where WAAAAYYYYY behind the pack to begin with. Every Browning rifle that I have spent time with shot .75 moa or less off the shelf with zero work done, and I have shot quite a few of them.

These are all legal during muzzleloader season in MS. That's why I got the .35 whelen. Put a Weaver Grandslam (very underrated scope IMO) on it and loved it. It would put a football size hole in a deer though if you hit the shoulder. The setup you have sounds very legit btw.

I've got one, but I would much rather hunt with my 270 win.

I admitted they are ugly... But any gun that has a black synthetic stock is ugly to me. When I get done with this gun, it won't be ugly anymore... But, how a gun looks depends on who's looking at it.

Yeah they were behind. I had one of those ugly, shitty Savages that were $250, or whatever they cost back then, when I was a kid. Great gun to learn how to deer hunt, and that's about it... But, here's the facts on the Savage I bought two weeks ago. The only thing I did to mine was take it out of the box, lightened the trigger as far as it would let me, and mounted the scope. We took it to my buddies lead sled, sighted it in, and let the barrel cool for a group. We shot a 5 shot group at 100 yards. I don't have one of those tools to measure MOA, but it was just one big hole. I haven't really played with it much beyond that because there was only a week of deer season left when I bought, so I was just wanting to get it to the woods. I actually killed a deer with it that Saturday... I'll really get the facts on it when I get moved into my house in a couple months, get the stock I want on it, and get my range set up on the crop duster air strip at our shop.

My savage was a package deal with a simmons scope I got 6 years ago (or maybe 7). Scope was mounted and bore sighted in the box. Straight out of the box on the led sled it was within an inch at 100 yds, and dead on. Have never adjusted the scope.

I don't mind the black synthetic, mine's so beat up now anything I had would be ugly.

Have you seen those commercials where the guy is shooting a Savage at like 1150 yards and knocking over metal plates? Then some guy goes "If you think this your father's generation of Savage, think again." or something like that... Yeah, my first Savage had to be from my father's generation of Savage.

Yeah, like I said, people have different tastes. My dad and brother love them.

It's just a basic rifle right now. One of these with a Zeiss on it instead of whatever that is.

Still trying to decide on stock. I'm going to call or email Bell and Carlson or McMillan sometime today or tomorrow and see what my options are.

I have an X-Bolt Stainless Stalker 7mm Mag. Its a little too much gun for whitetail hunting (esp with the long arse barrel), but it is a sweet shooting gun. It smashes the deer and is plenty adequate if I ever decide to go out West on an Elk hunt.

To each his own, though. If it's driving tacks the way you say it does then looks aren't that important...

The long barrel and long throw was not appetizing to me. That's why I went with a 300 WSM. 23" barrel and short throw, plus it tips the scale at 7 lbs sans optiks. A bit over kill for white tail but keeps tracking fairly simple.

My favorite things about the X-bolt:
Great trigger
Very comfortable stock that has a great feel
Detachable magazine
More accurate than I am

Not trying to compare it against anything else because after this one, I don't shoot anything else.

And I'm on my phone and I forgot who mentioned about the mag falling out while climbing. I have heard of this happening but it never has happened to me. If it continues to be a problem I believe the quick fix is shaving down the release with a dremmel. Obviously only take off as much as you need and don't go crazy with it.

150 grain Remington Cor-Lokts

I love the Cor-Lokts. They are cheap, accurate, and absolutely deadly. I shoot them out of my 30-06 and 30-30 too.
