Tikka makes a roughtech ranch 308 16” barrel. I initially bought the Ruger gen 2 and hated it. Sticky bolt, crappy trigger. Bought the tikka and am very happy. Silky smooth bolt and awesome factory trigger. Both come threaded and I put a cgs Hyperion k on it. Awesome little set up.

Teach your kids better that guns are not toys

We started that with our oldest already and she's not two yet. I know she doesn't understand fully, but I've started planting that in her mind already.

Louisiana has a $500 gun safe tax credit. Get a gun safe!

Lastly, if I do get my current barrel threaded, where would y’all recommend around the Baton Rouge area to bring it?
Is Red Jacket still open?

The taper on the barrel is likely too small to be threaded unfortunately.
They then thread it to 1/2”-28. After, they install an adapter to 5/8”-24. I had that done on one of mine with zero issues. Might’ve added 3/16” of extra length.

I agree with get a new gun. I’m not sure of that profile but it may be hard to get threaded or only be possible to do an odd ball size like 9/16 instead of industry standard 5/8x24.
Now that Tikka is offering more factory threaded options that’s the easy button. For gifgles I’d get a new caliber. 6.5PRC or Creedmoor are easy buttons. Just let a diehard 308 buddy use my 25 Creedmoor and he was impressed with the damage on a deer.
I enjoyed the Hornady podcast about bullet selection matters more than cartridge head stamp.

What type hunting situations do you encounter?
Spend $3,000 or save your money for a couple more years.
Take a look at Fierce.

People here will probably laugh, but I wanted to make a budget.308 and ended up with this “blem” from PSA. Can’t find anything wrong at all. It is tight and fires great. Just an option…

No laughing here, I love my blem .556, just need a can for it.

I do 99.9% of my hunting on my land in East Feliciana. We have a lot of power lines, but not a lot of crazy long shots (nothing over 300 yards)

Get a brand spanking new tikka t3 with a threaded barrel, duh.
I just did this in 300 WSM and man what a rifle. Super happy with it.
I plan to get a can in the next few weeks to top it off.

Get a 6.5 PRC from Fierce and own the power line.

This is one of the only places I’ve ever seen Fierce firearms recommended. Horror stories on every message board and I’ve personally witnessed two that had to be sent back. I’d stay away.
6.5PRC is a great opening in a Tikka and you can always rebarrel later if desired. 6.5PRC and 147ELDM will be a murderer.
