Boy is fishing a company tournament in G/I this weekend and wants me to gather some tackle up. What colors are best down there, brands?

I would say GI is not different than anywhere else in South LA for plastics. Determine what the water clarity and depth you plan on fishing then go from there.
I personally like the marker 54 glide shrimp (not the jerk) when fishing a cork. Matrix shad for a swimming tail bait.
I usually have something rigged in doubles in case we find them schooled up and in a feeding frenzy.
I like big hard body swim and jerk baits to target bigger trout.
Having said that. If it’s a tournament you will want some live bait preferably croakers or pogies if you can cast net them.
Good luck as it was tough down there last weekend. Was hard to find decent water.
