Yep, both my labs get the rattle snake vaccine shot once a year.

I didn't even know about a snake bite vaccine. Thanks for that info.

My beagle go popped this week by either copperhead or moccasi, didn’t see. She swole up pretty good on muzzle. Luckily few Benadryl doses and steroids and she was good few days later

We have a place south of Abeline. Occasional rattler. We give all our dogs the rattlesnake vaccine annually. Bout $85 each year.
It doesn’t “cure” the dog if it gets bitten but makes the bite less severe and extra time to get to the vet.

A friend of mine lived near Santa Fe. He took his Aussie to rattlesnake avoidance school. There they teach dogs to recognised the smell of the snake and shy away from it. He said it worked, that there were several times when they were out for a walk when his Aussie spotted one and back away from it -- warning him too.

Killing it with a shotgun is far too kind. I would have thrown gas on it and set it on fire for killing my dog. Especially one that cute. Then I would have shot it just to make sure.

Our camp dog got popped by a moccasin in the face a couple years ago and swoll up pretty bad and was acting crazy. Matter of fact we were about 2 miles from the camp bushogging and she wouldn’t let us get near her so we left her. A day later she made her way home and was fine. Granted this dog is 1/2 Great Dane and weighs around 80 pounds. I think dogs have evolved for such by not having many big blood vessels in their face. But a little dog weighing 5 pounds like the one in the OP probably got hit somewhere other than the face. RIP Tucker.

When I was a kid we did lose a beagle once that got popped under one of her back legs. Must’ve caught an artery. RIP Dina.

If a poisonous snake surprises me or my dogs in my yard I usually get the shovel and mess up that snake but leave it alive. Find a fire ant bed and dig it up, get the ants real riled up, then shovel the writhing busted up snake into the ant bed/hole and pack the remnants of the angry ants and the ant bed down on that bleeding broken snake.

Needless to say that those snakes make me angry…

I looked into the avoidance schools in the dfw area. Hard to find and rarely offered.
What they do is using stuffed snakes, and I understand defanged snakes, they use a shock collar as pain reinforcement to the proximity and smell of a diamond back.
I have heard good and bad about the classes. Some say they work and some say they don’t.
You will get varying opinions on the vaccine as well. Everyone in the area we are swears by them.
Not picking sides, we do the injections and prob would do a class if one were readily available.

When I was a boy, I lost by beagle pup, Buck, to a diamondback.

Love my sneks, but if one takes down my Yorkie, it’s damn sure going to regret it. Swiftly and without remorse..

From a current Yorkie owner this is heart breaking news. I could not see the pictures for some reason.
