They are beautiful snakes. I’ve only seen on in the wild. It was at least four feet long. I let it move on. It’s pattern worked well on a dusty clay road.

These threads are great. I have learned a lot by following them, and after seeing this one, and especially that pic of the Kentucky copperhead, I went looking to see if a copperhead and cottonmouth could crossbreed. Apparently they can.

https://www.reddit.com/r/herpetology/comments/d4b2eb/there_was_this_cottonmouthcopperhead_hybrid_at_a/

In theory they have only been crossbred in captivity, but you’d have to believe that somewhere they have crossbred in the wild. Have any of y’all who actively look for snakes come across anything like that in the picture, or other ‘odd’ looking potential crossbred cottonmouth/copperheads?

Haven’t seen any intergrades in the wild, but honestly that Kentucky copper I posted - I’d almost call that one a hybrid til somebody proves otherwise.

This was a copperhead? If so, that was a huge one. They normally don't get that long.

Comments like this make me really really miss the hunting camp. Can’t wait to get back up there soon

Here’s the best example of the Zorro mask out of my catches. This one was my favorite head pic til I caught that sinister looking black one.

What, if anything, do you use to catch these?

Mostly my hands and my balls, but rarely my brains.

Actually I manipulate them with a traditional snake hook, then pin the head with an elastic pinner (from Midwest Tongs). Then grab in a 3-point grip - finger on top of the head and right under the back of the jaw on each side.

Most tend to be very chill when you’re holding them. Maybe 1 out of 10 gets squirmy and makes you nervous.

I appreciate you taking the time to inform this board about stuff like this. I have learned a lot from you and others who have posted some good information. Thank you very much.

You know what they have to do to get venom from a snake right....they couldn't charge enough for antivenom to pay me enough to extract the venom.

Does anyone know, if there’s a correlation between being highly allergic to wasp and bee stings, and being bit by a venomous snake and having a hard time dealing with a snake bite?

Never been bit by a venomous snake before, but am highly allergic to wasp stings, so didn’t know if I’d have more to worry about if I were bit by a snake.

We used a pvc pipe with a cord ran through the pipe and looped it back into the pipe so you could open or close the loop over the snakes head. I haven't hunted venomous snakes in years but I did catch one at Oak Mountain State Park a few years ago. At first I thought I had caught a copperhead because like that KY copper you posted, ours were darker. A guy told me it was a cottonmouth. I didn't believe him at first. But that looks to be what it was. We didn't have cottonmouths in the mountains.

When talking about variations in the Copper head snakes.......

About 50 years ago and 40 miles north of Baton Rouge, I saw what looked to be a Copper head. This was in May and it had all the classic marking, except the snakes colors were wrong. This snake was light and dark gray and about 2 feet long.

I have always wondered if this was really a Copper head?

I got bit by a bigass cotton mouth when I was 18. They just pumped me full of antibiotics. No antivenin. I got sick and my elbow quadrupled in size but never died.
