Only engine is 4 cylinder with automatic. No V6, no diesel. They already have the 2.7 V6 from the F150 and 3.2 5 cylinder already available in the overseas version of the Ranger and in the US version of the Transit. But they do have some cool electronics!!

Shame on Ford. As a lifelong Ford fan I am embarrassed.

Ford, which plans to formally introduce the Ranger at the Detroit auto show on Sunday, will offer only one engine option: a 2.3-liter EcoBoost mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission.

What’s bad about it? Isn’t that 2.3 the same as the 4cyl mustang? I’ve read those 4cyl mustang can run 12s with minimal mods.

It’s not a 250, but I’m sure it can move around a light duty trailer like a Tacoma can.

I don’t understand the point of small trucks. Optioned out, they are in a similar price range to a full size, don’t get drastically better fuel economy, and are less capable overall. I’d bet the sticker on the FX4 Ranger will be in the mid $40ks.

I don't think many people who buy Rangers get them optioned out. There is a reason they don't want to spend $$$. Most Rangers I see are pretty basic.

The 2.3l crate engine ford sells has 310 HP, 320 Lb-ft or torque. I dont think power will be the issue. Stopping and Capacity seem like more an issue.

It's a good little engine but the 2.7 is 335 hp and 375 lb ft. so it's a lot stronger and it gives options to the buyer.

The 3.2 5 cylinder diesel is already approved by the EPA in the Transit and is already available in the Ranger elsewhere.

Giving it's truck customer the options truck customers typically want would have been easy and not expensive compared to retooling a whole new manufacturing plant.

This is not putting the customer first.

Can't put everything into the first iteration, how are they gonna get repeat buyers?

I'm with you, just saying that the little motor has plenty of power for the small truck.

More than likely you will run out of towing capacity and brakes before you run out of motor.

That truck would haul arse with the 2.7 Ecoboost.

Let's get this straight, you are complaining that Ford is using an engine that produces more torque and power than the boat anchor 4.0 V6 could ever hope for in the last generation Ranger while still getting MPG numbers that rival the anemic 2.3L Duratech I4. 10-spd transmission is going to make this engine punch well above its weight class too.

That engine makes 185 - 200hp and only 30 more lb-ft that what is offered here. That would be a good service engine for a business but would be a dog for anything else.

To me their draw is people needing a small work truck...Something they don’t give a shite as long as it gets from point A to B.

An F150 with a supercharged V8 and a beater Ranger with the anemic 2.3L Duratech hooked up to the equally anemic Mazda M5OD manual transmission.

If only there was still a true compact truck available though. I'll need to get rid of my Ranger soon to get something more suitable for work, sucks that there is nothing really comparable to replace it with.
