We planted wheat, cereal rye, and clover.

historic drought

Well shite. This so called rain has been a huge disappointment. At least for the Woodville area anyway

Yup. Went from projecting 4.5” to 0.6” in two days. This is unbearable

Going to get zero rain in Port Gibson. What a fricking joke.

I
I’ve gotten less than 3/4” in east Wilkinson County since Friday - even though every forecast I looked at predicted rain through today and that my rain gauge would be overflowing by now. It was enough for germination but I assume my plots are going to just limp along until we get some real rain - but I don’t really know what to expect because I’ve never planted this late before

If it makes yall feel better, I've talked to some locals to the area (family) that have planted in late November several years...we will be good as long as we get a second rain in the next 7-10 days. Good for the season, as long as we dont have a hard frost early....I just hope to feed the deer well in January at this point

My food plots are so spotty right now. Some small patches are coming up. Hopefully after this rain, it will get kicking!

We got a good rain this afternoon in NW Amite County. My son said the plots are coming around. The deer will hammer them once they are up.
Pouring now at 750 pm. I can hear it on the roof and it sounds amazing.

Buddy in SW Wilkinson County said it's raining good up there.

I am shocked right now. We planted cereal rye, wheat, and clover on Friday and Saturday, and we have grass popping up already. Very little rain since we planted and the grass has popped.

Either the guy you bought the cereal rye from lied and sold you ryegrass, or you have Italian/volunteer rye grass up in that pick. Deer will eat it either way, but maybe not as much a as and if he sold you ryegrass instead you might have spent more than you should have.

From the picture I don’t think this is the case, and gulf rye grass seed is about 10-12 dollars a bag MORE expensive than elbon rye this year
Rye grass seed used to be a cheap easy to grow filler, it is no longer cheap

Yea, that is what I was referring to. If he said this is cereal rye and actually sold you ryegrass at the ryegrass cost.
Doubt that happened now, since you knew it was higher this year. I saw it was twice as much on Green Cover, at least.

It was definitely Cereal Rye. But this is the first year we’ve ever planted this because we couldn’t get any oats. Does Cereal rye and regular rye grass look the same? Because I do agree it looks like regular rye in the photo.

There’s a home weather station in Centreville that is plugged into the Weather Unground network and it is showing 1.26” so far today. Also one in Woodville showing 1.04”

I would think most in SW MS got badly needed rain the last week.
Now the big question will be how many of us that have had seed sitting in the ground for weeks actually see it come up... Hopefully most of us do good luck everyone!
