I was recently gifted (through a loved one) apparently a really nice fly reel - Ross Reel. It has the spool of line already in it.

I haven't fly fished before. Obviously I need to get a rod to go along with the reel. The reel says it is a 7-9 wt (6-8 spey).

Any suggestions? I don't have to have a Ross rod, right? I can mix and match? Grab one at Cabella's, LL Bean, Orvis?

Any particular kind of fish you'll be going after? Bass? Saltwater (redfish)?

What kind of fishing will you be doing?
And any brand rod will work with any brand reel.

Actually looking to going into North Carolina and Tennessee for trout fishing. I've never really done it before. My uncle, who gifted me the reel, used it all the time out West and in the Eastern TN/Western NC area.

I'm not sure where or what happened to the rod. After being gifted a nice reel, I can't say, "Hey, what am I supposed to do with this? It doesn't have a rod."

Sure can. I always suggest browsing the used market and Ebay. A lot of people use a fly rod once and never touch it again for various reasons. TFO makes good rods for a first time buyer.

Not in North Carolina. I fish 4 or 5 weight (pretty standard for trout). Sometimes I go with a 6 weight to throw heavy streamers. Only place s you would go that big are Pacific NW for salmon or monster trout in Alaska.

You can trade that reel for a lighter rod and/or reel for trout fishing if that's your target.

It’s a good bass/redfish/speckled trout reel.

That's over powered for what you want to do with it. I would keep it as a keep sake or trade it for something you can use.

How do you go about trading? Ross website? This isn't some family heirloom, so the whole point would be for me to get some trout.

As mentioned earlier, I've never fly fished before. I don't want to get ripped off and am inexperienced. From what I have read, Ross seems to be an elite brand.

FlyFishingForum

Websites like the one above. State that you want to trade the reel you have for trout fishing combo. Some forums have a trade section, or you can simply put "WTT" in the heading. I would also look into any local fly fishing boards. If nothing else sell it on Ebay and use proceeds to buy trout fishing combo. Before accepting a trade or making a purchase you should research more on how much your reel is worth and the correct size and type gear you are looking to get into.

Seems to be $400+. Nice bit of luck. If it doesn't have any scratches or dings I would try and sell it for $450 and buy 3-5 wt rod and reel.

Ross
