Trick is to cut there fins off. Gives them more action. Used that for bait for many years chasing ling. Oh, best size are around 8" long.

I got shanked in the side of the foot by one of those frickers last year.

Felt like my foot was in a furnace all night.

If you take a regular pair of fishing pliers, you just grab the barb, break it, and it usually pulls off clean. Do that for all three and you have a harmless, yet wonderful cobia bait. Its still weird sticking your hand in the livewell though . You gotta trust no one stuck a fish in there when they forgot to cut em.
