They say no birdnest on a setting. Just throw it out and you dont have to thumb it. You ever use one? I have to know if its legit.

It's legit if you get the settings correct.

It's a great reel to learn things like dock skipping with.

I know a few people with them that really like them. The only downsides (if you really want to get nit picky) is that they are a bit heavy and if you're a good caster already, you're paying for a functionality you really only need those few times you f something up.

I’ve got a couple and I can backlash ‘em ! I can backlash any reel...I am very adapt at it...

They’re great reels though.....I’ve caught some bruising snook and jacks on em and even some 50 pound tarpon and quite a few permit.....they’re legit....pricey but worth it.....but they can be backlashed, trust me

If you can throw a baitcaster Id suggest not getting the DC version. It really adds extra stuff you dont need. Its built really well though.

It’s legit but not worth the premium for my uses IMO. I bought one and sold it. It helps a lot if you’re slinging big crankbaits or lipless cranks into the wind on a regular basis, I just didn’t find myself doing that enough to justify keeping it. They excel in ledge fishing situations where you don’t always get to choose the direction you cast relative to the wind, or in general if you throw a lot of baits that are heavy enough to get the spool burning early in the cast but then are big enough to catch a lot of wind.

Its the best reel I've ever bought. In fact it is so good that my 8 year old now fishes with one and he hasn't had one backlash.

I won one on fb and a kistler rod, paired them together and loved it so much I bought 2 more identical setups. You cannot beat that for casting a rattle trap or crankbait into the wind. It definitely can be backlashed though. I also love it for skipping docks. You can skip a jig or chatterbait way under a dock with that set up. I recommend that reel for anyone that doesn’t mind spending the $250. My rods are kistler helium 3’s, and I also recommend them to pair with the reel.

It’s legit. Especially inshore when the wind is blowing. I put a weighted hook w/minnow on it and set it to the highest setting and tried to backlash it by throwing it as hard as I could. Took it like a champ. Being able to skip bait on water is a really cool

I have one. Been a spinning reel guy my whole life but I really like it.

And I really like it even though my first trip with it I tried to sling the shite out of the bait using braided on a windy day. You know how that turned out. The no bird nest thing is not quite an exaggeration as it’s very reliable if you’re not an idiot like I was that day.

I bought one and wasn't impressed. But I'm thinking I may have gotten a lemon. I've been throwing baitcasters all of my life and rarely backlash a standard reel. The issue I have with my DC is that the instructions say you should not thumb the reel when the lure is in the air. Well you can tell the reel is trying to control the cast, so that makes sense. Let the digital control do it's thing. But the problem with that is that occasionally it doesn't control the cast, and instead of feeling that with your thumb and stopping the reel before the backlash gets bad, you're expecting the DC to do it. So if it doesn't do it, the backlash is worse than I get with a standard reel.

That's one reason I think I may have gotten a lemon. The other reason is that everyone that likes their reel talks about being able to clearly hear the DC control on every cast. It's like a whirring noise the controller gives off. Well I rarely hear much of anything from mine.

Then it’s not working properly. You can clearly hear it when you cast. Every time. Even just pitching it.

So is the Shimano a better reel for no backlash than the Diawa Tatula or Zillion SV TWS? Both of the Diawa's are designed to eliminate backlashes. I have a Zillion but just don't use it a lot for skipping. That is an acquired art and requires practice. A good friend who uses the Tatula amazes me on Toledo Bend where he skips swim jigs underneath cypress branches. He can skip 20 feet up under the branches.

Maybe I’m missing the boat, but I don’t need or want to pay for extra features that I rarely use.

Speaking of rarely use, I hear you! I have a 60 grand bass boat that I don't use enough.

It’s hard to define ‘better’ because a lot of these adjectives depend on how good/bad you are at skipping in general.

I’m a habitual skipper. Jigs, senkos, chatterbaits, I’m skipping it. For me, all the new reels with the really good inertial control systems are excellent skippers. I’ve got a deck full of hyper mags right now but I’ve thrown Shimanos, Daiwas, Garcia’s, etc. The premium models all skip well.

If you’re a beginner learning to skip, you’ve got an advantage with the DC because it will actually stop the reel for you quickly.

Well I am impressed with you skippers. When I fish with my skipping buddy he fishes water I simply can’t get into. That’s one reason I dislike Toledo Bend. He catches in his water and I don’t in mine.
