I think we all just need to come to terms with the fact that our ecosystem and fishing will never be the same again. No one respects anything down here. We overfish and overuse all of our natural resources. Mostly for money too and we know how corrupt this state is. Money is what makes the decisions down here.

No one will seriously try to tackle the issues we face. We could probably use more strict rules and regulations on how many and what size of fish you can take, but they also need to tackle the pogie industry and come up with better ways to fix the marshes.
La's habitat loss / change over the past 100 years is the elephant in the room nobody can do anything about and ultimately it will change LA at an even more alarming rate.

but great post

Ma'am, just look at them
Then she asks how many male and female of each.

How can you hire a biologist who can't tell a blue from green wing teal? Bitch colorblind or something?
those are data collecting interns.... some for the feds wanted to get me ticketed for having 4 greenheads, 2 woodies and 2 hoodies.

Habitat loss is likely the overwhelming reason stocks are depleted vs any other outside factor.

Louisiana is the only state on the gulf coast (maybe in the country) that still allows Pogie fishing on the beach. We can do something cheap and immediate to end that nonsense. Addressing habitat loss will cost billions and take eons.

Start with the commercial fishing. And reign in the skimmers while you’re at it. They’re not helping matters either.

I have never been bow fishing but in my opinion ending bow fishing would be a drop in the bucket trying to help red fish populations overall.

The land loss I have witnessed just from the late 1990s to present day is unreal just behind Grand Isle/Leeville/Fourchon. These disappearing estuaries has a greater impact on fisheries than any baw with a fishing pole or a bow (I think) and I don’t know if we can get them back.

yes it can. what you arent looking at is bow fishing happens at night, in protected areas, were fish go to chill/sleep or whatever is it the do when resting, and the harassment from bow fishers at night disturb them. i have no idea what happens if a fish cant ever rest, but im sure it has an impact.

plus many fish have their guts torn open, or large gouge wounds from bowhunters making bad shots, and those fish will soon die from that.

LA is the only state that has free range for pogey boats (which is absolutely horrible) I wrote legislators (knowledge from OB) this past May to consider having restrictions, but the pogey plants, which isn’t even American owned, have lobbyist and grease the right people. Plaquemines parish/Vermillion parish plants will cry and say you are taking peoples jobs putting restrictions bc they won’t catch as much.

The commercial shrimpers are protected bc they feed the world and already have seasons/zones/TEDS

Rec fisherman (it seems) are low on the totem pole and it won’t change.

All this to say I believe curtailing will help some but we would still see a decline in stock regardless due to irreversible habitat loss thus tighter limits on non-lobbying or non big business recreational fisherman.

Now show the Menhaden Catch from 1980 to today and I'll bet we see a real coincidence with the Redfish/Trout stocks.

Bow Fishing

I don't like Bow fishing nor do I bow fish but to blame the population loss on Bow fishing is absurd. It is such a tiny fraction in the bucket compared to the Pogy Industry and land loss.

Right now the Menhaden losses are causing the redfish, trout, and other species to look for alternative food sources--namely the fingerling population of the same specices which is causing a lot of this problem.

bull shite. We went thru this back in the 80s with redfish. Thats when GCCA came in and gave a united voice to rec fishermen and put pressure on the legislature to give trout and reds gamefish status and reign in gill netters and purse seiners. I know CCA has had its internecine battles over the years, but it is possible for rec fishermen to win in the legislature. But it has to be thru massive pressure on the legislators via a cohesive effort.

There's 10x more gator tails running around in the marsh right now looking for dogris than there are bowfishing rigs. That does way more damage than the few people bowfishing.

Seriously? Have you ever worked at a job where they hire interns who are pursuing a degree? They hire people who really don't know anything to do things like counting stuff so they can learn a few things and be out in the field. If you really want to help, offer to show them how to differentiate so they will "know something".

It wasn't an intern, baw.

Also when I have my interns, they work with me. I wouldn't send them on a job in a company vehicle alone with no experience on wtf to do.
This same person also saw a grey duck and said we were over the limit on black ducks a few weeks later.

Surveying hunters at the launch requires experienced supervision?

That being said, they have no business telling you anything about limits.

I mean if they don't know the difference between a grey duck and a black, yes.

I mean gray is just a whiter shade of black...

I demand that biologists start taking color lessons in college now!
