Looking specifically at Garmin EchoMap 54CV for $439 or 54cv or get the 53CV for $359 and pay $100 for the Louisiana Maps

I have a Garmin and I like it a lot. But if you want to use a map card then choose another brand. As far as I know you can't use another card with them like you can with a Lowrance, Humminbird, or Raymarine. Just something to keep in mind.

This, IIRC Garmin has no card ports. Humminbird will except SD card maps and Lowrance will except microSD cards. All cards aren't formatted for all units. It's been my observation that some cards like the Standard Mapping cards work in Lowrance but not in Humminbird so if you have a particular card you're interested in using make sure you buy a compatible Unit.

These Garmin models have card slots, but I believe they only add Garmin maps

I would NOT buy a Garmin due to their lack of acceptance of a mapping card. They did come out with their own version a year or so ago but it won't work on most of their units.

I have a garmin GPS and radar combo 740 love it but I am using maps that aren't worth a shite. So much so have considered adding a lowrance GPS to have a mapping unit to go with what I have.

The garmin bayou card for the price is the best production card out there.

People can make their own maps for the navico group.

I'd tend to disagree when you can get lowrance sat overlay for free with a little time and a pc.

I heard bad things about the hook series about lagging doe to crappy a processor. Don't know how true that is.

This is why I'm not a huge fan of HdI/hook series lowrance. They're usable, but noticibly slow.

Lowrance HDS line is amazing though

Lowrance is owned by Navico.

Hdi is no longer around. The elite ti series is the way to go for half the price of the hds.
It uses the same software as the hds.
I've used the elite Ti multiple times and own an HDS

To the OP, Garmin doesn't accept much for mapping outside of what they provide and that is not much. The other poster summed it up when saying that card may not work. Lowrance is what you need when looking for imagery

Found the Hook 7 with Insight coastal map included for $399 at Academy. That's $100 less than most places. Yes, includes the transducer. Despite the shortcomings I can't find anything else in 7" near that price. Seapickle, you have La coastal maps for that unit?

I ha e a Garmin EchoMap 74DV and the Garmin satellite map. It works Ok, but Id probably go with Lowrance if I could redo....their map has better contrast of water/marsh and I often have to take off my Costas to see during the day.

Other than that, I’m pretty happy with the EchoMap. Agree that you should go with the largest screen you can afford. Also suggest you mount on top of a Ram Mount to bring closer to eye level and better visibility.

Can you also send me some info about your map card? I have a Lowrance Elite HDI.
