I am taking my son on his fist overnight Cub Scout camping trip. Aside from the obvious tent, sleeping bags, flashlights, mess kits and food, what do you recommend I bring to make this trip fun for everyone? I was a Boy Scout in my youth, but do not recall anything specific that my dad brought for us. It was mainly my buddies and I exploring the wilderness for the first time on our own. TIA!

Firewood is tough to find if your at a dedicated scout park. (At times).
Plenty of kid snacks. Mini headlamp. Am/fm radio.

Get a wagon and bungee cords to bring all your stuff to the site. If it’s anything like our scout camp, it’s a hell of a hike from the parking lot to the camp sites.

When I say wagon, I don’t mean radio flyer. Get one of those big wagons from academy or the like.

Being that you said Cub Scout, I’m not sure how old your son (or daughter) is. Knives are age specific and if you bring one, keep it in it’s sheath on your person at all times. If you bring an ax, be sure it has a sheath and is locked away in your sleeping bag in your tent.

Camping chairs/ table. Also sleeping pad for under sleeping bag. You might consider bring a bed sheet to cover with and just sleep on top of the sleeping bad if it’s gunna be hot.

Patience. And a positive attitude. And snacks. My son just made it through cub from tiger to AOL and is crossing over to Boy Scouts this month. If he has fun this time there will be a second and so on.

Some scout masters can be sticklers about rules. Be sure to put your bourbon in a bottle labeled "soap".

LOL....Bring answers...for a LOT of questions.

If you think he might ask questions about "What is this?" or "What kind of plant is that?" Then you might wanna get a good reference guide to bring.

20% Picaridin bug spray, one Duraflame starter log, either a cool new knife or flashlight for the kid, and a discrete flask of booze for you (regardless of the rules).

If you don't have any fields guides, this is a pretty handy one:

Walking stick for you and the child. They’ve got a bunch of purposes besides just walking. Great for knocking down spider webs and for chasing away snakes.

ETA we always make new ones the first night.

Vodka because others can't smell it

Seriously the glow sticks are a great idea because you can spot all the kids from a mile away. A mom brought them on our first camp out and it was brilliant. Also wouldn't hurt to tell all the dads to bring a thermacell

I bought camping cots on Amazon. I like to get up off the ground. Even with an air mattress, just seems like the ground is uneven.

Are you going to Avondale outside Clinton?
