First Boat Advice?

Looking at buying a used John Boat to get out on the water with the kids and fish a bit more. What size would the OB recommend for 1-2 adults and 2 small children (under 10). Don't want it to be unstable but don't want unnecessarily big. Wouldn't hurt if I could try to duck hunt in it either...
Also - direct drive/beaver tail, traditional outboard, long tail/gator tail mud moter? What say you to get around and back in areas (mostly North LA).

16' min length, 42" min width, 25hp outboard min, front deck and rear seat, aluminum floor, flat or semi v will work fine.

42" min width
I'd go 48in width just to be safe. I have a 16x48 and its pretty stable. Easy to walk around and stand in without worrying.

48" bottom width minimum.
25hp pull start

Agree with the 48” the other posters said, especially with 2 kids in the boat. Hard to beat a 1648 with a 25-40 tiller drive. Layout depends on what you want to primarily do with it.

Budget? 2 kids I’d start at a minimum with a 1548 and preferably a 1648 or bigger.

Haven’t settled on budget yet, want to figure out what’s needed to stay safe and then go from there looking used on FB. Don’t want to cheap out and have a bad time then the family isn’t into it...

Enjoy! We use the same Jon boat my great granddaddy used! Treat it right and it will last forever. I believe it is 10 feet long.
My dad just got a new mirrorcraft that is more of a “traditional” fishing boat, and the kids love it.
Different uses for the boats, though.

Take into account the kids will grow and children will move around in the boat...when looking at Jon boats inquire whats the max number of persons allowed in boat
The 16` foot range can be either 3 or 4 persons allowed. Suggest purchasing the widest jon boat you can ( 54" 56").

You can probably get away with 25 but I would get a 50 to 75 as price particularly used isn’t much different

If you expect to have 4 people in boat buy one that holds 5 otherwise you’ll be crammed and hoping the kids don’t put a hook in your head
