I see what you did there.

Can bear dogs read posted signs?

They put out corn and peanuts every day, year round, to keep the bears near by.

Hmm...I don't think I would've told that.

Best bear areas in NC are the swamps on the east coast.

I stand corrected. You just can't harvest a bear while it is eating your unprocessed bait pile. Some strange laws in NC. Confusing to me. Regulations link: LINK

Yeah my cousins from WNC were trying to explain it to me. I think it has to do with bear and deer densities but may be mistaken

This is the truth. I grew up in the WNC mountains. I saw a few bears here and there as a kid. But when I worked on the coastal plain of NC, 25+ years ago, I saw some monsters near the big corn fields in Carteret County, NC. Way more bears down east than in the high country.

When I was in Infantry school outside of Camp Lejune in NC we had to do a night orientation course. There were four of us on a team working the course when out of nowhere we saw two black bear cubs pop out of a gully. Seconds later momma came barreling out of another ditch growling. I have never run that fast in my life. I shed the empty M-16 and all of my deuce gear. It’s not like they give Marines fresh out of boot camp live rounds to go waltzing around Lejune at night. No one got hurt, and we didn’t bump into them while retrieving our gear.

I’d love to go on a bear hunt one day. They are impressive animals.

Yeah, the feeding is legal as long as it’s not processed food. Plus, they’re not hunting over the food, just using it to encourage them to hang out in the area.

Yeah, I get where you’re coming from. It’s not pretty, but few things in this world are.

The bears need to be managed since nothing else can kill them. They do damage to the populations of the other game species nearby. The hounds are the most efficient and effective method of managing the bears in wild country like that.

The dogs don’t shy away from the hunt. They thrive on it. They can’t wait to get after it. They are doing what they were born to do, and few of us can claim to be so blessed. But it’s obviously complicated and nuanced so I get your criticism. Reality is often ugly.

You may be right from a size and population standpoint, but the swamps are hell compared to the Appalachian mountains. I’d rather be high on a mountain than sunk in some godforsaken mosquito-infested lagoon that smells like rotting shite

This was my second year trying spot and stalk archery for bear in the Ozarks.

My family land in Southern Arkansas got its first bear season this year. We can bait with most foods starting one month prior to season start

Seemed like a 50/50 split between Walkers and Plotts. There was one hound that had long ears like a plott but had fur just like a yellow lab. Not sure what breed that would be but it looked good.

Apparently the peanuts in the shell are preferred over corn. I guess they like the extra fat in the oil.

have a place in Cashiers, NC. Was there last week and saw many a bear hunter. Always hope I see them with one when I drive by so I can stop and give them props. I'm sure they would think, "O hell here comes the greenie".

My place is at 3500 feet so you must have been closer to the park. WNC is rugged arse country. It's like Vietnam dropped got dropped in the mountains due to it being a rain forest. Thickest stuff you will ever see.

WarCamEagle88, I found this article about Plott hounds and their history in North Carolina. Thought you might enjoy it, especially since your bear hunting friends in NC are probably running Plotts? Interesting article: LINK
