A boating accident in Clearwater last weekend left one dead and many more injured. A guy running a boat at night ran over the ferry boat then fled the s scene. He was later picked up. He was not drunk. Not sure at this time if he just didnt see the ferry or was impaired in some other way

Sad

My guess is this the boater was following their path on a screen and not watching what’s actually in front of them.
Similar conversations on the other threads with the bass tournament wrecks.

Lots to go around with that video. He didnt have his all around light on either. Though it would not have helped, it is a requirement. It looks like his side lights are on but its tough to tell from that distance.

Apparently the guy is a prominent businessman in Clearwater and it was not his first boating accident.

When I saw the news I thought for sure the operator had to be drunk. Why the frick wouldn't you stay and render aid? You are going to get caught, there are cameras everywhere, now you just added charges and absolutely no sympathy from the general public or a judge when it ends up in court.

Reports today coming out that he did in fact stay on the scene, render aid to the passengers. Some reports are also saying he helped move the ferry over to a close by sandbar to keep it from sinking and getting into deeper water.

He did however leave the scene to go to a near by boat ramp where he was picked up. He did call 911 immediately after the collision and identified himself. It doesnt seem like he was trying to get away. Not sure why he left before law officers got on scene. Maybe he was trying to get his boat on the trailer before it sank, Just a guess. He alsso had passengers on board that helped.

But agree that he should have stayed on scene until law officers arrived if at all possible.

Half of all boaters should not be out there. You see how people drive when there are roads, lines, and speed limits and they still can barely manage to keep it going. Boaters scare the heck out of me.

Well this changes things a little bit. Doesn't excuse his reckless operation but at least he tried to help after it happened. The local news made it sound like he plowed into the ferry and then took off before offering any help.

I don't understand how we categorize this as a Mass casualty event if 1 person dies.

seems reasonable to be concerned about. He can’t help them anymore if his boat sinks

This is true everywhere but it is especially true in South Florida. There are simply too many boats in to small an area which can be ran....its all day everyday and at times conditions are less than ideal - wind, strong tides, narrow channels....it is a shite show for the most part.

Go to the Boynton Beach inlet and you'll quickly get an idea of who should NOT be handling a boat.

I struggled with that as well. The fire chief explained today that when they have a massive amount of possible injuries, and they need resources from different areas, they categorize it as a mass casualty event. When I hear mask casualty, I'm thinking multiple dead. But he said it also can mean numerous injuries of all kinds that need different levels of assistance.

His words, not mine

Casualty = death or injury. 1 dead + 10 injured = 11. Textbook mass casualty boat accident

Yea I agree now but a lot of people , including myself, have always thought of casualty as a death
