Not that a $400 dollar reel catches more fish

There's a point at which it matters. I used to use $80 whatever combos and would consistently get outfished by a buddy, 2 of us in the same Gheenoe throwing the exact same lures most of the time. My dad got me a decent rig as a birthday gift and I immediately was more competitive because it cast better/farther and I could feel the bait better. You don't have to go up to a $400 reel; that first gift was just a Cardiff, but being off by 3-4 inches under that overhang can mean the difference.

I agree with others that the bang-to-buck curve starts falling off in the $150 range for both rods and reels, but I have more expensive ones anyway. Just because it makes the day more enjoyable.

MHX blanks which are affordable and easy to build.
Rainshadow blanks are a good affordable blank also.
I also still have some old Allstar blanks going back to 1990's that are hard for me to not cut the guides off and rebuild as needed.

6ft 11 MH or H fast action - everything but cranks as you want a slower action for them.

I like my TFO Professional, have had it for a couple of years now. It’s stiff but has a lot of play in the tip. Pulled out many of ditch pickles with this guy. 7ft split grip for a little over 100 bucks.
Have a few of their fly rods so I figured I’d give their bait caster a try and am pleased.

If y'all are still looking for a Poison Adrenas, a guy on Facebook Marketplace has a 7'2 Heavy he's selling for $225 in Lake Charles. He said it's still available, but I personally don't trust used rods

So if you've never spent more than $150 how can you be sure you don't get much more bang for your buck... but I digress

I have had the chance to fish with some guys who use the high dollar stuff. Is it good... absolutely. Can I justify spending that much more... personally I can't.

7'2 Heavy

I have that model. It's a sweet rob, but not very versatile IMO. It's a pretty stout heavy action that I throw frogs and punch with.

You can get a Sarge Custom rod in the $400-500 range, only one I’m aware of.

Damn, I guess the supply chain costs drove the cost up somewhat. I fish 100% saltwater and I've got a MOAR med-light that is my go to wade rod. $350 two years ago.

For those asking about or criticizing the cost, throwing and working a topwater skitterwalk with a rod like that is heaven. After a few dozen casts on a long wade, the low weight is everything.

I'm going to grab another one from him at the Houston Fishing Show next week.

I have a few Daiwa Tatula Elites that have served me very well. AGS versions for the bottom contact presentations.

I've been wanting to try the Expride so will likely buy one of those next.

Doblyns or Kister. I don’t own either but have fished with both multiple times and they are really nice

There is a HUGE difference between $20 $50 and $100. I find there is much less difference between $100 and $350.

The jump from $20-$50 to $80-$120 is stupid, you will feel more fish with $100 rod, so you will catch more.

There’s not a big difference between low $100s and over $200 to me, certainly not $350. I’d rather have 3 $100 rods, rigged and ready to go for different types of fishing than one rod where I’m wasting time changing bait

Midwayusa.com ended up getting 1 more 72MH Expride A back in stock so I got it for $225. Hopefully they don't cancel my order this time.

I found some slightly better deals on FB and ebay but like knowing there's a company behind it if there is a problem and I'll have a receipt for any warranty issues.

Thanks for all the input.

I mean, I keep 9 on the deck or in the box, if you want to spend 6-7 grand on rods and reels, go for it.

New model. I’m not buying at this moment but I was looking at options the other day. I actually need a Medium/F spinning setup. I bank fish and would like to get a 7’6 so that I can really get the casting distance. Unfortunately, not seeing that as an Expride. I did see a Zodias with those specs so will want to get a feel for that model too.

Honest question - what're you throwing on this rod? When I'm using spinning tackle for bass, it's always ML or L. Do you use the M/F as a jack of all trades rod for bank fishing? Or is there a specific technique you're using it for? I use M/F Casting rods a ton, but can't think of any applications where I'd rather have a spinning rod for those presentations aside from really windy conditions.

ETA: part of that is I just feel awkward fishing moving baits on spinning gear for whatever reason. I know plenty of people fish jerkbaits and topwater on spinning rods as well as the obvious bottom contact presentations (drop shot, shakey head, ned rigs, etc....). It's just never something I've gotten into.
