After the torrential downpour last night, I went check out the discharge bayou on Woodview lane at daybreak. I have 16 channel cats in the chest now using thawed gumbo shrimp tails on the bottom from the bridge. The strong runout has em biting quick. Good luck to all out this morning.

I can't wait until the Mississippi River water level goes down so I can access my favorite spot. I need it to be 5 ft. of less in the N.O. area and right now it is at 16 ft., so I have a pretty long wait.

I catch perch in City Park to use as live bait, hook them mid back with big circle hooks about 2 ft. above a 2 oz. lead weight and cast them out as far as I can from the bank.

This usually results in some good size cats and a mix of blue, channel and flathead cats with flatheads being my favorite.

Do you catch any Texas cichlids at city park?

No, never have. Just about every bite is a perch, then the occasional small bass and I've even caught a couple small gars that I use for cut bait.

The gars last a LONG time on a hook with them being so tough.

I actually only try for perch by using small hooks with a bit of worm or grub under a small cork. If I catch a dozen or so, I'm done and head home to put them on an aerator to keep alive and head out the next morning bright and early to the river.

Do you eat these River cats? I’ve always been told the ag runoff and general pollution levels in Mississippi are off the charts by time it gets this far south. Not sure I would eat them but sure would be fun to catch. I know you could catch them behind levee near LSU when water was high, they cruise the bank.

We put out some yo-yos the other night and had close to 40 between 10p and 8am with some rebaiting in between off the pier. That shad spawn usually doesn't help but they stayed hitting thru day break

Yes I do. I've been catching and eating catfish out of that river ever since I was a kid and I'm now 72 years old. I haven't grown a 3rd eye, prehensile tail or second head in all those years.

I have got a bud living in the Clarksdale, ms area that catfishes on the Mississippi River…he catches some monster catfish! I have been meaning to go up and fish with him for a day or two.

You won't regret it. There's a lot of u-tube videos of guys fishing the Mississippi, many of them overnight and out of a boat and catching HUGE cats.

Just about all of them just catch and release and do it for the fun of it and not put fish in the freezer.

The Mississippi has been pretty hot as well. One of my buddies has been hammering them on limb lines

After this upcoming rain event, this weekend should be prime off the bridges over canals leading into False River.
