I have seen a lot of .22 and handgun calibers stuck in asphalt roofs. Normally the bullet doesn't puncture the decking. I would suspect you need a heavy-grain bullet to fall with no forward velocity and penetrate a commercial metal structure. Less so if it was a low-angle shot and the bullet still had a good bit of forward momentum.

Reason No. 3,429 to stay away from Dollar General.

How unlucky does someone have to be, to be the object struck in a DG with all of the unstocked merchandise and crap in the building.

This is how they taught us in hunters safety. It’s deadly if there is any angle on the gun.

I’ve seen people do this before.

We manage a rental property that twice has been hit with bullets falling from the air. Brand new roof.

Saddam was a big fan of it.

KE = 1/2 mass x velocity squared if I recall correctly. That squaring of the velocity will kill you baw.

saw 2 individuals (separate times in the 90s during new years) Charity ER with bullets nearly perpendicular, partially embedded in their skull. both individuals were fine, just stunned & freaking out when they discovered they had a bullet stuck in their skull

I’m not a smart guy but I don’t see how a falling bullet could be that dangerous if it’s falling straight down. I understand if it’s shot at an angle. But straight down is just gravity. Be like dropping a pebble off a building.

It's not going to bounce off you, it's going to go thru you.

If you just drop an object the size of a bullet 1000 ft up, it's going to do a lot of damage.

Y'all need to watch more mythbusters.

I actually can't remember exactly their outcome. I've always thought falling bullets fired mostly vertical wouldn't do much damage. But, trying to read up on it, there's a ton of variables, and I'm not interested in learning math this morning.

Not sure about going through a roof, but a girl I went to grad school with was shot standing outside in Destin. Bullet went in right behind her collar bone, just missed her heart and lung, and came to rest on top of her diaphragm. She brought the x-ray to class one day.

ETA: I’m pretty sure it was NYE.

I remember in BR in the early 2000’s a girl was killed on New Year’s Eve from a bullet that was fired into the air. I’ll try to find an article. I remember thinking “damn the bad luck”

Work colleague/friend’s nephew was killed in BR from falling bullet on 4th of July 2001 - I wonder if that’s the event you are thinking of.

“ In 2001, Baton Rouge's 4th of July festivities were marred by the death of 8-year-old Sean Pfister, killed by a falling bullet fired into the sky by an unknown shooter.”

That says nothing about dropping a bullet from 1000ft.

Commercial Roofer here...bullets will absolutely penetrate a metal roof. It's only a 26ga panel that can be cut by snips. Years ago I roofed O'neal Steel in B'ham. The guys inside would tell us they hear bullets penetrate the metal wall panels and bounce off the steel inside. I see bullet holes on metal roofs around B'ham all the time. I even found a freaking arrow with a field tip penetrating a metal roof once in Bessemer.

I mean, due to all the physics I don't fully understand, I think a 3-400 grain arrow, with fletching to prevent it from tumbling, is far more likely to do damage from falling than a bullet is.

I was using 1000ft as example, industrial job sites go to great lengths to make sure screws, bolts, nuts etc don't fall from heights normally a lot less than a 1000 ft. They are not doing that for the hell of it. Bullets go much higher obviously and will be traveling faster.

Happened to my wife here in Baton Rouge a few years ago. Went through the roof, ceiling, hit the floor, bounced up and hit her right in the gut. Her muffin top saved her.

No reason to think it wouldn’t have been much, much worse if it hit her first instead of bouncing off the floor.
