The 4x4 diesel only gets 4-5 mpg more than the 3.5 eco, and it will run you at least $4k more. Hard pass.
Holy shite, I thought you were exaggerating. I have a 2016 3.5 eco 4x4 and a diesel 2018 similarly equipped would be about $4K more than my MSRP.
Can't get it with the 36 gallon tank either I see... dumb.

Only? That’s 100 more miles every tank.

There's no way the diesel is $4K more than 3.5 ecoboost markup right?
Where are you getting $4k from? Everything I've seen the diesels start around $55k. Maybe $4k more than a similarly equipped EB, but there are plenty of EB options cheaper.
Eta: why would the diesel initially be the same price? Maybe down the road, but almost always the new options are more.

3.5 eco is already more expensive than 2.7 or 5.0 so I'm surprised to see it even more than 3.5 eco. Off to youtube to see how quick these things are.

Driving my 4th one now. I still have all of them. Oldest has 800k miles.

Wait until 2020 when the new low sulfur diesel mandates go into effect.
Those guys buying 3/4 and 1/2 ton diesels, that don't really need them, will be unloading them left and right when the price sky rockets!

You can get a titan xd diesel in bare bones, vinyl floor single cab. Initially came out in 4 door nicer package, now every trim. That bare bones work truck is around 30 ish and they have been running a 7500 rebate for some time. So you could in theory get into it pretty cheap.
I just bought a titan 4x4 xd diesel and freaking love it. Statistically the tow numbers aren't much more than a regular v8 gas half ton. However tow ratings only show one piece of the puzzle. The bigger frame, brakes, rear end, etc. make it to where you can't even feel a 8,000 pound trailer. On top of that the body of the truck is not quite as big as a 3/4 ton, which is appealing. Bed is 69 inches wide just like a 1/2 ton of any of the truck manufacturers.
Trailer I tow daily with my half ton would let me get about 8 in NOLA metro, 10 on highway, 15 on hwy with no trailer. New XD, with trailer is 11 or so in town, 16 on hwy and hwy without trailer is around 20. I'm sure numbers would be even better, but I also have a level kit with 285s.
Point of all this is there is a market for these half ton diesels. The Nissan one gets dumped on for not being a 3/4 ton, but yet it doesn't really outperform half ton trucks too much. In my case it definitely does. This is a big heavy truck. If you dropped a diesel like this in a regular size half ton I would imagine the fuel economy would be amazing. Could the 5.0 Cummins work in a smaller truck than an xd? I think it would sell if it was feasible, lot of these lawyers driving around uptown and old metairie with their f250s would line up to buy a f150 platinum with a diesel.

I don't think your performance numbers are correct.

i double check his F150 diesel performance number and an 8.7 popped up quickly.

Well the first thing I doubted was that the 5.0 was faster than the 3.5 eco in 0-60...

I don't have expensive oil changes
The EcoDiesel Rams have a 10 quart oil sump and are required to use Rotella T6 sythetic or similar. The 3.0 PSD has a 6.5 quart sump and Ford's internal oil spec for the engine covers dozens of oils (they do not recommend using the latest API FA-4 oils though) that are much cheaper than T6. So an oil change and filter between a 3.5 EB and a 3.0 PSD are not significantly different in terms of cost. The 3.0 PSD uses dual fuel filters so it probably will have a pretty reasonable service interval and many diesel truck owners add additional filters for oil and fuel anyway.

This looks promising

So how new is this "lion-hearted" engine? The compacted graphite iron block and 16.1:1 compression ratio carry over, but the crankshaft, crank and rod bearings, fuel injection system, turbocharger, and exhaust crossover pipe all required re-engineering to withstand the more severe duty cycle this engine was expected to face in an F-150. The crank receives different machining and heat treatment to increase its strength, and the bearing material alloy is altered to improve durability. Common-rail fuel injection pressure increases from 26,100 to 29,000 psi, and multiple pilot-injection events reduce the idle clatter that plagues many diesels. The single Honeywell variable-nozzle turbocharger is revised to better withstand sustained high heavy loads (such as towing 11,400 pounds up the Davis Dam), with boost pressure peaking around 20-22 psi. That crossover pipe gets new metallurgy and a redesign of its accordionlike flexible section in anticipation of greater thermal cycling. All in, with a 6.5-quart oil sump, the new engine weighs 620 pounds—about 150 more than the aluminum 3.5-liter EcoBoost.

It's better spec'd than the VM L630 of the EcoDiesel, looks like they paid close attention to the Ram offering.
Ford released this statement about the API CK-4/FA-4 diesel engine oils.

The 5.0 Cummins isnt the issue. The issue is that it's not a 4 cylinder 3.8 cummins. Ford got that much right, they went with a small engine in a full size truck.

I think they're probably pretty neck and neck. doesn't seem like too many publications cover 0-60 on trucks nor does the manufacturer present them.

So you made the numbers up on the spot didn't you?

From what I can tell by reading from various sources and talking to Ford dealership friends the 5.0 benefits more from the new 10 speed than does the 3.5. That's probably because the EB engine has a broader torque range so the 5.0 finds and stays in it's sweet spot better.

Watched some youtube vids... Think most of them were fastlane truck vids. Please note the "~" and what that means..

That's interesting. Not in the market for a new truck anytime soon, but with the upgrades that they made to the V8 recently I could see myself trying one of those out if they still make them in 2021-2022
