I was in great shape too. I ran a lot including running up the Ms. River levee for a couple of months so I was in shape for here. The altitude though up there was very difficult for me

Download onx

Watch RANDY newburgs elk hunt series with onx on YouTube

Use stair master. Increase intensity weekly

Wear your pack. Add weight. Get your core strong.

Don’t try to save money on gear. You will regret cheap gear. They have great backpack hunting Facebook groups to get used gear

Buy leg gaiters. I use kuiu but lots of good options.

Shoot your bow daily. When that elk is at 50 yds, missing can’t be an option. Practice ranging and shooting quickly.

Meal prep. Don’t wait until last minute to understand what your body will need and how to pack light weight

Bring pedialyte packets. It will save your arse if you get dehydrated. Drink twice what you think you need.

Understand the country you are in. Grizzly country means you need to study grizzly behaviors.

Contact a local packer. Sometimes paying the money to get one packed out is worth it depending on the distance and amount of time you have to hunt. Plus, in emergency, you want them on standby

Get a garmin in reach if the area you are hunting has no service. The SOS feature and insurance to pay for that helicopter ride is worth it if needed.

Cook an elk tenderloin rare over the fire. Best thing ever.

Yeah we will be in good shape, we have pretty good gear for the most part: good packs, good glass, shoot our bows a bunch.

I'll share with you what I was told on my first bow trip out west:
If you see an elk in range, calf, cow or bull, shoot it!
Killed a cow on the first hunt...

I took diamox for a trip before. It definitely does what it claims to do. It does not miraculously make you a ridge blasting monster, but it does help you acclimate much faster.

I dont take it anymore because the side effects kinda suck. You'll have to piss every 30 minutes it seems like (which is why it works) and I had tingly fingers on it.

IMO its better to acclimate one night in a motel at 9k feet or so and be very hydrated.

Qualifications: I have nearly died from pulmonary and cerebral edema and hypothermia at about 9200 feet.

Get a backpackand place weights in it. Start with 20lbs then add 10lbs every 2 weeks. Join a gym and get on their elliptical machine with pack. Work up stamina to go at least 1 hour without stopping carrying 50 lbs weight in pack. If you aren't in physical shape then you will rarely be successful hiking up and down mountains at 8-10,000 ft.

Where we hunt they can be at anywhere from 7000 (camp elevation) or 9500 (top of the ridges). Depends on water, food and pressure.

Go to Kodiak Island. Some of the biggest Elks in the world are there, +/- 1,200 lbs. But, so are the biggest brown bears, +/- 11' tall.

Early September may be a bit early for the rut. They may be in a late pre-rut pattern.

A lot of bugling likely won’t be as effective as cow calling. The bulls will be trying to locate cows.

On a set have a shooter and have someone 50 or so yards behind (away from the bull) them cow calling. The bull’s attention should be more on the cow calling and as he approaches he will be looking past the shooter.

If you aren’t familiar look into Randy Newberg’s videos and also Corey Jacobsen’s program I think it’s called elk university or something. Both worth the time and money if you’re serious about wanting to kill an elk.

Edit:

About 2-3 weeks before departure drink more water than you ever have. A gallon or more a day. It will build blood volume and actually increase your blood O2 carrying capacity. Also, think about taking supplements to increase blood oxygenation. I also always have a good muscle recovery mix with me - like post workout BCAA stuff and drink it every night. It definitely helps with muscle recovery.

Like others have said you can’t do to much cardio in prep.

Random bump, but has anyone registered for an Alternates List hunt for elk/deer? If so, what are the odds you get one?

Just signed up, hoping for the best.
