I will be heading to an elk archery hunt soon and then hopefully get drawn for an elk rifle spot a few weeks later. I have never been elk hunting before but have deer hunted extensively.

I have a nice pack, binos, rangefinder, etc. I have wind direction powder, a Hoochie Mama call, compass, game bags, and a Havalon knife. Any other suggestions?

I'm not in in as good of shape as I used to be. I'm 45 and 3 years removed from running sub 24 min in a 5k.

But I should be able to hump better than most. Good idea on the medical tape.

Archery season is like turkey hunting something with a good nose and long legs.

You got the general idea. I can’t speak to the archery hunting as that is a lot different than rifle.

What’s state? I can tell you about the joke that is Colorado.

Garmin GPS with extra batteries, moleskin to cover any blisters, wool socks and wool clothing (No Cotton-Cotton kills in freezing weather) expect snow in September. 0 degree F sleeping bag, pad or cot, hi-protein foods, water filtration device. 3 or 4 season tent, fire starting materials.

Remember in the Rockt Mtn region you are not the highest predator. Avoid rock outcroppings for Mtn lions and watch your backside, in bear country have a sleep tent void of any foods, odors, etc. Set up the cook tent well away from sleeping area.

Where? I don't think there are any open draws right now

Where are you going?

One of us is either very over prepared or woefully under-prepared

It's not called mile high for nothing. Pro football teams used to travel to Wyoming to practice a week before their game in Denver. Wyoming is higher than Denver ....Prepare for the elevation and remember water puts more oxygen in your blood when Elevation sickness hits.

I start off with duct tape on my heels. Then I never worry about it all day.

Bring some paracord. Multiple uses. Small tarp to lay meat out on.
