Check out the predators at harbor freight. We have a 3500 watt inverter and a 9k generator. They get good reviews and so far have been reliable.

I’m looking at generators in this power range as well.

Anyone ever run one of the Tri-fuels on propane? I’m curious as to how long a standard 20lb propane tank would last running one. Will probably end up just running Nat gas line for it, since I have a line already that’s fairly close to where the generator would be located. But if a regular 20lb propane tank can run one of these things for a day or so, I may just grab 2-3 propane tanks instead.

Obviously it depends on size of generator and load on generator but I just ordered a firman tri fuel (below) and the paperwork says 4-6 hours on a five gallon propane jug at 75% load.... I'm doing natural gas...

And im reading a 5gal bbq style propane tank will get you roughly 5 hours like was stated above.

I’m looking at low thd generators in this power range as well. I think you’ll want a 100lb propane tank or two if you plan on running it for more than a couple days on propane.

I really want like a 9000 inverter but im considering the Westinghouse 12000 because it’s 12000 running watts and it’s low thd like an inverter.

Ah ok, was thinking if a bbq style tank could last a day I’d just go that route. But if that’s not the case my gas meter is like 15 ft from where generator would be, so I’ll just get a short line ran.

Was initially looking at the champion 11,500/9,200W, but may check out that Westinghouse one. Need to take a look at what loads I actually want to power up. Really just focused on powering central AC, refrigerator, deep freezer and 1-2 rooms of lights. But I’m sure I won’t regret having extra capacity to spare.

I was torn too.. The ONLY reason I went with the firman was the 240/50amp outlet. The champion was 240/30amp.

Both good generators.

I bought one (LPG/Gasoline) earlier this year. Only put oil in it and ran it with 120V tools to make sure it works. Didn't go beyond that. Seems well built. Don't have any real load/run time experience

This is where I screwed up. After Ida, I bought the Champion tri fuel. Just had gas line run for it. After the soft start for the ac, I'm still very hesitant that the champion will run it. Waiting for interlock kit to test it out.

Maybe one of you guys smarter than me can answer this-
If the Firman and the Champion both are rated at ~10k watts and 240v, what is limiting the Champion to only 30amps? Is it only the 30amp breaker? I found a company that makes 35, 40, and 50 amp circuit breakers for the Champion.

I bought this same Champion last yr. While I haven’t needed to use it in a post-hurricane situation, I did have an interlock installed and it ran everything you listed without any issue when I tested it via a 50amp plug.

I’ll try

Is the champion you have 10k running watts or starting watts? What’s it’s running watts on natural gas?

Power is volts multiplied by amps. The generator will only make what it says it’ll make. 240 volts multiplied by 30 amps is 7200 watts.

As far as what actually trips the breaker it probably wouldn’t trip at exactly 30 amps, 8000 running watts divided by 240 volts is 33.33 amps. I don’t think it will run sustained at maximum running watts for a long time, I also don’t think that’s good for the unit. Small trips into your “starting watts” probably won’t trip it either.

Someone please correct me if I said something wrong.

That's where I'm confused...if the math for both is 10,000watts and 240volts, how does the Firman have a 50amp receptacle and the Champion only a 30amp?

Sorry for the thread hijack

The 50 amp plug doesn’t mean it’ll make 50 amps it’s just a nice to have. Like if you have a 50 amp inlet for your rv or your house, you won’t need an adapter, just a regular 50 amp cord.

Also the champion says it has 7000 running watts with natural gas, you’ll be fine with the 30 amp breaker.
